Job summary

ip-tribe is seeking a hands-on Senior Systems Engineer to lead implementation, support, and optimization of mission-critical telecom and IT infrastructure. You will ensure high availability, security, and operational excellence while delivering complex projects and maintaining documentation.

Senior responsibilities include providing technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and driving engineering best practices.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline.
• Hands-on Linux administration experience and capable of system installation, configuration, hardening, patching, and troubleshooting.
• Experience managing VMware or equivalent virtualization platforms.
• Familiarity with SIP, RTP, VoIP technologies and SBCs.
• Ability to lead projects, mentor juniors, and promote engineering standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide ongoing operations support, including on-call rotations and troubleshooting of complex systems.

Job description

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Systems Engineer to lead the implementation, support, and optimisation of mission-critical telecommunications and IT infrastructure solutions. The successful candidate will be responsible for project delivery, system operations, technical troubleshooting, and client engagement while ensuring high availability, security, and operational excellence.

For senior candidates, the role also includes providing technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and driving engineering best practices.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Delivery

• Lead the implementation, integration, testing, and commissioning of telecommunications and IT infrastructure solutions.
• Manage technical project activities from deployment to operational handover.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, implementation procedures, system designs, and operational runbooks.
• Perform system upgrades, migrations, and capacity expansion activities.

2. Operations & Technical Support

• Provide technical support for critical production systems, including participation in standby or on-call support rotations.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues involving operating systems, applications, virtualisation platforms, network components, and telecommunication services.
• Coordinate with vendors and technology partners for issue escalation and resolution.
• Monitor system health, performance, and availability to ensure service-level commitments are met.

3. Security & Compliance

• Implement security hardening and system protection measures in accordance with organisational policies and industry best practices.
• Support vulnerability assessments, remediation activities, and security compliance initiatives.
• Maintain system documentation relating to security controls, updates, and operational procedures.
• Serve as a technical point of contact for customers during implementation and support activities.
• Conduct technical discussions, workshops, and solution presentations.
• Work closely with technology vendors on product updates, escalations, and technical advisories.

5. Technical Leadership (Senior Position)

• Provide coaching and technical guidance to junior engineers.
• Promote engineering standards, operational excellence, and documentation best practices.
• Facilitate knowledge sharing and continuous improvement initiatives within the team.

Requirements

Education

• Diploma or Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline.

Mandatory Technical Skills

Systems Administration

• Hands-on experience with Linux operating systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Rocky Linux, or Ubuntu.
• Experience in system installation, configuration, hardening, patching, and troubleshooting.
• Experience managing VMware or equivalent virtualisation platforms.
• Familiarity with virtual machine provisioning, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

Telecommunications

• Good understanding of SIP, RTP, and VoIP technologies.
• Experience supporting Session Border Controllers (SBCs) or voice communication platforms.
• Knowledge of telecommunications network architecture and troubleshooting methodologies.

Applications & Infrastructure

• Experience supporting enterprise applications and web/application servers.
• Understanding of HTTP, SSL/TLS, reverse proxy, and load balancing concepts.
• Experience with scripting and automation using Bash, Python, or PowerShell.

Security

• Understanding of network and infrastructure security concepts.
• Experience implementing system hardening and security best practices.
• Familiarity with firewalls, access control, encryption, and authentication technologies.

Preferred Technical Skills

Candidates are not expected to possess all of the following.

• Kubernetes or container technologies.
• CI/CD pipeline tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or similar.
• Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Exposure to DevSecOps practices and automation.

Telecommunications Specialization

• Experience with Oracle (Acme Packet), Ribbon, AudioCodes, Metaswitch, or BroadWorks environments.
• Knowledge of mobile core network technologies, including 4G/5G architectures.

Security Specialization

• WAF, IDS/IPS, endpoint protection, and security monitoring solutions.
• Vulnerability management and security assessment experience.

Preferred Certifications

One or more of the following certifications would be advantageous:

• Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
• VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent
• Session Border Controller (SBC) certifications
• ITIL Foundation
