The Centre for Healthcare Innovation Living Lab (CHILL) is an in-house prototyping and testing lab under the Centre for Healthcare Innovation (CHI), part of the National Healthcare Group (NHG) in Singapore. NHG spans Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Woodlands Hospital, the Institute of Mental Health, and NHGP Polyclinics. CHILL works with healthcare professionals across these institutions to design, prototype, test, and scale physical product innovations that improve patient outcomes and the working experience of healthcare workers.
The role
This Senior Assistant Manager position sits within the Kaizen Office at CHI and is hosted at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The role covers the full industrial design and product development lifecycle, from early user research through to vendor-managed manufacturing, and includes a capability-building component in which you teach prototyping skills to healthcare professionals.
What you would do
- Run user research with healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and residents to understand problems, define product requirements, and identify nice-to-have features.
- Conduct market research to map existing or comparable product solutions.
- Lead concept development and ideation sessions, and systematically prioritise concepts for prototyping and testing.
- Create and update CAD models, drawings, and documentation using tools such as Rhinoceros 3D, Fusion 360, Solidworks/Autodesk, and Adobe Illustrator.
- Build low-to-mid fidelity prototypes using rapid-prototyping methods including 3D printing, machining, and basic fabrication, and define colour, material, and finish (CMF) specifications.
- Ensure prototypes are designed for eventual mass manufacture and comply with relevant standards (ISO 13485, FDA, HSA guidelines) where applicable.
- Design and conduct user tests in lab-based and real-world settings, document outcomes, and propose next steps.
- Source, engage, and manage third-party vendors for medium-to-high fidelity prototypes and manufactured products, including writing requirement specifications and managing change requests.
- Maintain comprehensive project documentation for each phase of work and work with NHG's intellectual property office to protect product IP where applicable.
- Deliver structured workshops and project-based learning sessions to build basic prototyping and testing competencies among healthcare professionals.
What they are looking for
- At least 5 years of experience as an industrial designer or design engineer, with a strong portfolio in physical products, ideally gained within or serving large organisations.
- Prior experience creating physical prototypes and managing vendors for medium-to-high fidelity prototypes or manufactured products.
- At least a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of industrial design fundamentals, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in industrial design tools including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Solidworks/Autodesk, Rhinoceros 3D, Fusion 360, and Figma.
- Experience leading and facilitating co-creation and design workshops.
- Good communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills, with curiosity and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong interest in product design for healthcare settings.
