Job summary

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Singapore is seeking a senior engineer to advance R&D projects focused on vessel performance modeling for electrified and hybrid assets. The role uses simulation tools and systems thinking within a classification society framework to support design assessment, rule development, and class services.

You'll assess propulsion architectures, develop models across operating conditions, and contribute to ABS Rules and Guides.

Qualifications

• Master’s or Ph.D. in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
• Strong maritime industry experience and understanding of vessel operations.
• Experience in vessel performance, propulsion, or integrated marine system simulation.
• Good understanding of marine propulsion power architecture, including propulsion, electrical generation, power distribution, energy storage, and control systems.
• Familiarity with classification rules, international standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Knowledge of ship resistance, propulsion, powering, and energy efficiency principles.
• Familiarity with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, Modelica, ETAP, PSCAD, or similar.
• Strong analytical, communication, and technical writing skills

Responsibilities

• Assess vessel performance, propulsion architectures, and onboard energy systems for ABS classification and advisory work.
• Develop and apply simulation models to evaluate performance across operating profiles and environmental scenarios.
• Analyze propulsion power demand, energy use, speed-power, and vessel efficiency for various vessel types.
• Evaluate propulsion power architecture options including generation, storage, distribution, drives, and controls.
• Review design submissions against ABS Rules, Guides, and international standards.
• Contribute to ABS Rules, Guides, and internal methodologies related to vessel performance and propulsion.
• Prepare technical reports and collaborate with shipowners, designers, and researchers.
