Job summary

Singapore Management University is seeking a Research Engineer to join the SMU Urban Institute. You will work with the Lead PI and Co-PIs on a project exploring outdoor lane-level road navigation and indoor pedestrian navigation solutions.

The role involves deploying software modules from GNSS/RTK algorithms, integrating outputs into map systems, and conducting field tests across varied venues while documenting findings for reports and milestones.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or related field; or Bachelor's with minimum 2 years relevant experience.
• Proficiency in at least one mobile development stack (Android/Kotlin/Java, iOS/Swift, or Flutter/React Native) and/or modern web development (JavaScript/TypeScript, React/Vue, Node.js, Python Flask/Django).
• Basic understanding of GNSS/GPS concepts or willingness to learn RTK concepts and satellite positioning fundamentals.
• Familiarity with Git, DevOps basics, and API integration.
• Strong problem-solving and ability to work independently with moderate supervision, translating research goals into engineering deliverables.
• Good communication skills to liaise with researchers and external partners.
• Organized and detail-oriented for data collection and documentation for ground-truth reporting.
• Willingness to conduct field testing in varied environments (malls, MRTs, test vehicles).
• Familiarity with sensor APIs (Wi-Fi scanning, Wi-Fi RTT, IMU/accelerometer-gyroscope) is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Software implementation: develop deployable modules from GNSS/RTK corrections; integrate outputs into maps; UI development.
• Field testing and data collection: deploy and test navigation solutions; indoor testing across venues; process traces for analysis.
• Documentation and reporting: maintain technical docs and assist with project milestones.
• Data management: follow SMU research data policies and data handling.
• Collaboration: work with PhD students, postdocs, and Co-PIs; liaise with stakeholders as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
