Job summary

The National University of Singapore's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering invites a Research Fellow to lead silicon photonics and advanced optical packaging projects. You will collaborate with researchers, students, and industry partners to translate experiments into scalable solutions.

You will design simulations, optimize fabrication processes, supervise junior researchers, and contribute to publications and patents, while aligning with project timelines and industry objectives.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent degree preferred in Microelectronics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, ICT, Science, Physics or related.
• Experience in clean room fabrication, dry etch, wet etch, optical interconnects, fiber arrays, photonic packaging, semiconductor packaging, metrology or reliability testing advantageous.
• Important simulation software: Zemax OpticsStudio, Ansys Lumerical or COMSOL.
• Advantageous software: 3D CAD tools, Klayout or L-Edit, MATLAB, Python.

Responsibilities

• Research & Development: advanced optical coupling and packaging for silicon photonics, chip-to-chip and chip-to-fibre interconnections.
• Develop and standardize simulation workflows with Zemax, Ansys Lumerical, and COMSOL.
• Design and optimize optical coupling structures using Monte Carlo simulations and tolerance analysis.
• Develop and optimize fabrication processes with DfM and DfT for scalable reliability.
• Design, develop and implement optical characterization setups to evaluate coupling strategies.
• Supervise and mentor junior researchers and graduate students.
• Data Analysis & Reporting: manage collection, preprocessing, and large-scale analysis of optical datasets; perform light cleanroom fabrication duties and device characterization.
• Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences; prepare technical reports.
