Job summary

Menlo Research is seeking an Industrial Designer to own the form language and physical identity of Asimov, from enclosures and surface treatments to ergonomics, CMF, and packaging. You will translate that vision into parts that manufacture, assemble, and survive the real world, working shoulder to shoulder with mechanical and electrical engineers so every design decision holds up in production.

This is design that ships to real hardware, not renders.

Qualifications

• A strong portfolio of shipped physical products demonstrating design under real constraints.
• 4+ years shipping complex hardware such as consumer electronics or robotics.
• Deep fundamentals in form, proportion, ergonomics, and CMF.
• Proficiency in 3D modeling and surfacing and in DFA/DFM experience.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes (injection molding, sheet metal, die casting, finishes).
• Experience collaborating with mechanical engineers and contract manufacturers.

Responsibilities

• Own industrial design for Asimov and the Menlo hardware family: form, proportion, ergonomics, and CMF from concept to production-ready enclosures and covers.
• Turn mechanical and electrical constraints into clean, intentional design that communicates the engineering.
• Prototype quickly in foam, 3D print, and machined parts; iterate on real robots.
• Own CMF specification: material selection, surface finish standards, color systems, supplier engagement.
• Lead design for manufacturing and assembly: DFM reviews, tolerances, fasteners, serviceability, part count.
• Design human-facing details: grips, handles, access panels, indicators, and user interfaces.
• Shape packaging and unboxing experiences and documentation for development hardware.
• Maintain design consistency across the Menlo hardware family as the portfolio expands.
