Job Description
Responsibilities
Substation and HV Distribution Design
- Lead conceptual and detailed design of primary substations, including transformer sizing, switchgear configuration, and protection coordination.
- Define campus reticulation architecture for 33kV to EHV distribution serving multiple data halls across expansive sites.
- Develop single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, and loadflow models that balance capital efficiency with operational flexibility.
- Coordinate with utilities on interconnection design, metering requirements, and interface points between utility assets and customer-owned infrastructure.
Multi-Market Delivery Coordination
- Oversee HV design execution across concurrent projects regionally, working with local engineering firms and EPC contractors.
- Ensure designs comply with regional grid codes, safety standards, and authority approval processes specific to each jurisdiction.
- Manage design review cycles with utilities, regulators, and independent verification agencies to meet project milestone dates.
- Establish design templates and standardisation protocols that reduce engineering hours while respecting local code variations.
Stakeholder and Authority Interface
- Serve as technical representative in utility interconnection negotiations, addressing feasibility constraints, cost allocation, and schedule dependencies.
- Lead coordination meetings with transmission operators, distribution network operators, and regional energy authorities.
- Support Development and Legal teams in reviewing utility connection agreements, technical schedules, and performance guarantees.
- Manage relationships with third-party consultants and certification bodies required for statutory approvals and commissioning sign-offs.
Technical Integration and Risk Management
- Integrate HV design with data centre electrical architecture, ensuring seamless handoff between medium-voltage campus distribution and facility-level systems.
- Identify and resolve design conflicts related to space planning, equipment access, cable routing, and operational interfaces.
- Conduct constructability reviews and value engineering assessments to optimise capital cost without compromising reliability.
- Track design risks related to long-lead equipment, supply chain constraints, and regulatory approval timelines, escalating issues proactively.
Experience, Skills and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
- 12+ years of experience in high-voltage substation design, transmission interconnection, or utility-scale power distribution.
- Demonstrated expertise with 33kV to EHV systems, including transformer design, switchgear selection, and protection relay coordination.
- Direct experience coordinating HV design delivery across at least two APAC markets (Korea, Japan, Australia, India, or Singapore).
- Proficiency with electrical design software including ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or equivalent loadflow and short-circuit analysis platforms.
- Strong understanding of IEC standards, regional grid codes, and utility interconnection processes.
- Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, coordinate across engineering disciplines, and meet aggressive delivery schedules.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; ability to translate technical requirements into stakeholder-appropriate language.
