Salling Search is launching a 30-month Graduate – Technical Shipping program based in Singapore. You\'ll rotate through technical shipping, chartering, and commercial roles to understand how a global shipping operation runs and to build readiness for a technical or leadership path.

You will gain exposure to vessel operations, risk assessment, budgeting, and the commercial decisions that shape ship management. This program centers in Singapore with hands-on learning from senior teams.

A major commodities and shipping business wants graduates with some maritime background to join a 30-month program. You'll work in technical shipping, but you'll also see how chartering works, how commercial decisions happen, and how the trading and financial side operates. If you want to understand how a global shipping operation actually runs, this is it.

The point: take someone with basic technical knowledge and turn them into someone who understands shipping from multiple angles, knows how to think about risk, and is ready for a proper technical role (or leadership) after.

THE ROLE

You’ll be based in Singapore, mostly in the Safety & Technical team.

What you’ll actually do:

• Go out on vessels with senior people. See the ship, talk to the crew, understand what the vetting process is looking for. You’ll learn fast what a well-run vessel looks like versus one that’s cutting corners.
• When incidents happen, you’re involved in working out what went wrong and why. Read incident reports, support investigations, learn how to think about operational risk.
• Watch how vessel owners budget, how maintenance gets planned, how technical decisions connect to what the business spends money on.
• Spend shorter stints in chartering, operations, and commercial. How do you actually hire a vessel? What happens during a voyage? What’s the market doing and how does it affect decisions?
• Take on one or two projects where you identify something the business should improve. Work it up. Present it. See if it happens.

You won’t be an expert after 30 months, but you’ll have real exposure to how the business actually works.

THE RIGHT PERSON

• You've got some maritime background. Could be a few years at sea (deck or engine), could be a degree in nautical science or marine engineering. Could be something else maritime as long as you actually know how ships work technically.
• You're genuinely interested in shipping. This isn’t a box to tick on your CV. You actually want to understand how the industry works, where the decisions get made, why things happen the way they do.
• You're organised and can pick things up quickly. You won’t know the answers at first, and that’s fine. You’re good at spotting what you don’t know and actually learning it instead of pretending.

WHY THIS ROLE

Shipping is global, technical, commercial, sometimes chaotic, and it matters. A company this size has real scale, real problems to solve, real exposure to market conditions. You’re not pushing paper. You’re learning an actual business.

After 30 months, you’ll know what dry bulk shipping is about. You’ll have worked with vessel owners, ship managers, and brokers. You’ll understand why the company makes the chartering and technical decisions it does. You’ll have presented ideas to senior leadership. And there’s a genuine path into a permanent technical role with them if you and they think that’s the right fit.

Plus you’re based in Singapore. Shipping happens here. The people who know shipping are here. If you’re going to learn it, might as well be in the centre of the action.
