Job summary

LINKTRIX Consultants, Asia Pacific is seeking an Automation Engineer specialized in electrical and instrumentation engineering for industrial automation systems. You will design electrical systems, prepare drawings, and support panel manufacturing, FAT, commissioning and site handover.

You will work closely with client programming teams and must understand PLC/HMI architecture to define I/O requirements and assist with troubleshooting across the project lifecycle. Travel to sites may be required.

Qualifications

• Diploma/Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Automation Engineering or equivalent qualification.
• Experience in electrical design, dimensioning and preparation of electrical drawings.
• Experience with control-panel engineering/manufacturing support, FAT, field installation, testing and commissioning is preferred.
• Willing to travel outstation/overseas and work at customer/project sites when required.

Job description

Automation Engineer - Electrical Engineering

The role is primarily focused on electrical and instrumentation engineering for industrial automation systems, including electrical system design and dimensioning, electrical drawings and documentation, control-panel engineering, field instrumentation interfaces, installation supervision, testing, troubleshooting and commissioning.

The engineer will work closely with client Programming team throughout the complete project lifecycle. While electrical and instrumentation engineering are the primary responsibilities, the engineer is expected to possess sufficient PLC/HMI and automation knowledge to understand the overall control-system architecture, define and verify I/O requirements, engineer appropriate PLC and control-panel hardware, and support troubleshooting and commissioning activities.

The engineer will be responsible for assigned electrical engineering activities from design and documentation through panel manufacturing support, FAT, field installation, commissioning, SAT and final project handover.

Job Responsibilities

• Develop electrical system designs, calculations, dimensioning and engineering documentation according to project requirements and applicable standards
• Prepare and maintain electrical drawings using EPLAN, ELPROCAD, AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent professional electrical CAD systems
• Develop single-line diagrams, power and control schematics, panel layouts, terminal plans, cable schedules, interconnection drawings, I/O drawings and related documentation
• Perform electrical dimensioning and component selection including cables, circuit protection, contactors, motor starters, VFDs, soft starters, power supplies, transformers and associated equipment
• Engineer industrial electrical and automation control panels including power distribution, PLC/I/O systems, motor controls, drives, instrumentation interfaces and field connections
• Determine PLC/control-panel hardware requirements including I/O quantities, signal types, interface requirements and panel provisions, in coordination with the Programming Engineer
• Develop and verify I/O lists jointly with the Programming Engineer
• Review P&IDs, process descriptions, equipment lists, technical specifications, vendor drawings and datasheets and translate these into electrical and instrumentation engineering requirements
• Select and verify appropriate field instrumentation such as proximity sensors, limit switches, pressure, temperature, level, flow and other process/control instruments according to project requirements
• Prepare and review instrumentation-related documentation including instrument lists, I/O lists, datasheets, wiring/termination drawings and interface details
• Engineer and verify instrument power supplies and signal interfaces including digital, analog, 4-20 mA, RTD, pulse and communication-based signals
• Provide engineering support during control-panel manufacturing, assembly and wiring and resolve electrical technical queries
• Conduct drawing reviews, panel inspections, continuity/connection checks and electrical hardware testing
• Participate in integrated hardware/software testing and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT)
• Execute and support site commissioning, Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) and performance testing
• Perform onsite and remote troubleshooting of control panels, field wiring, instrumentation, motors, drives and associated automation equipment
• Supervise and coordinate electrical and instrumentation installation activities at customer/project sites
• Review and verify cable installation, termination, earthing, power distribution, instrumentation connections and installation quality against approved drawings and requirements
• Support field testing and interface verification of instrumentation and associated signals
• Coordinate closely with Programming Engineers during I/O testing, PLC/HMI integration, troubleshooting and commissioning
• Coordinate with customers, contractors, panel builders, suppliers, vendors and other project stakeholders
• Maintain red‑line drawings and prepare final as‑built electrical and instrumentation documentation
• Provide remote technical support to site personnel for electrical, instrumentation and control‑system troubleshooting
• Provide technical support and training to customers, project stakeholders and other client team members when required
• Undertake other technical and project‑related tasks assigned by the Line Manager

Skills and Knowledge

• Strong knowledge of industrial electrical engineering, automation systems and control‑panel design
• Competent in electrical calculations, dimensioning and selection of electrical components
• Strong ability to prepare and interpret industrial electrical drawings and engineering documentation
• Proficient with EPLAN, ELPROCAD and/or AutoCAD Electrical, or equivalent professional electrical CAD systems
• Good knowledge of MCCs, control panels, motors, VFDs, soft starters, contactors, circuit protection and power/control distribution
• Good knowledge of industrial sensors and instrumentation and their electrical/control‑system interfaces
• Good understanding of digital and analog signals including 24 VDC I/O, 4-20 mA, RTD and other commonly used industrial signals
• Good understanding of PLC hardware, distributed I/O, control‑system architecture and I/O allocation
• Working knowledge of PLC/HMI systems sufficient to support electrical design, testing, troubleshooting and commissioning
• Familiarity with Siemens and/or Allen‑Bradley automation hardware is preferred
• Good understanding of industrial communication systems and interfaces such as PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Ethernet/IP and Modbus
• Good knowledge of field electrical installation practices, cable routing, termination, earthing and instrumentation installation
• Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, process diagrams, equipment specifications, datasheets and vendor documentation
• Familiarity with relevant IEC standards and applicable electrical engineering standards and good engineering practices
• Strong systematic troubleshooting and fault‑finding capability

Qualification & Experience

• Diploma/Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Automation Engineering or equivalent qualification
• Relevant industrial experience in electrical engineering, control‑panel engineering, industrial automation or related fields
• Practical experience in electrical design, dimensioning and preparation of electrical drawings
• Experience with industrial automation projects involving PLC systems, MCCs, drives, instrumentation and field equipment
• Experience in control‑panel engineering/manufacturing support, FAT, field installation, testing and commissioning is preferred
• Able to execute assigned electrical engineering activities with minimum supervision
• Able to work effectively with Programming Engineers and other engineering disciplines
• Willing to travel outstation/overseas and work at customer/project sites when required
• Proactive, responsible and able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary and international project team
