Job summary

NTU Singapore, School of Art Design and Media, seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor in Digital Filmmaking to advance research and teaching in film and moving image media within an interdisciplinary setting. Qualifications

• A PhD (or Practice-based PhD) in Digital Filmmaking or a related field. Alternatively, applicants with a terminal MFA (or its equivalent) will also be considered. In exceptional cases, an MA with substantial practice-based industry experience will also be considered.
• Proven expertise in digital filmmaking (production) and audio-visual storytelling; specialisation in areas such as cinematography, sound design, film music and creative producing, are encouraged
• A strong portfolio demonstrating artistic excellence; scholarly impact will also be looked at favourably
• Familiarity with rapidly evolving filmmaking technologies and practices, such as virtual production, AI-generated content (AIGC), and AI-assisted workflows
• Evidence of internationally recognised creative practice, including screenings, exhibitions, and top-tier festival participation
• Proven teaching and student mentorship at undergraduate and/or graduate level
• Strong collaborative, communication, and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

• Conduct and disseminate internationally recognised creative practice and/or practice-led research with scholarly publications in digital filmmaking, cinema studies and related fields.
• Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in film production, moving image media, cinema studies, film aesthetics, and related areas of specialisation.
• Supervise undergraduate final-year projects, graduate dissertations, and practice-based research projects.
• Contribute to curriculum innovation and the development of new courses aligned with evolving industry practices and technologies and contemporary pedagogies.
• Engage with emerging developments in film and media technologies, including AI-assisted technologies and workflows, and digital production environments.
• Participate actively in academic administration, service, and committee work appropriate to rank.
• Contribute to the School’s strategic development and foster collaborations with industry, cultural institutions, and interdisciplinary research partners.

The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) and Associate Professor (Tenure-track) in Digital Filmmaking at the School of Art Design Media. This role is essential to advancing the University’s commitment to excellence in film, media, and digital creative practice within an Asian context at a leading global research university.

The successful candidate will contribute to ADM’s program in the cinematic arts and the rapidly evolving fields of film and moving image media, through research, teaching, and academic service, within an interdisciplinary and practice-led environment. Applicants should demonstrate familiarity with, or significant engagement in, Asian and/or Southeast Asian film and media cultures, industries, or practices.

The area of specialisation within filmmaking is open, but applications from cinematographers, sound designers and creative producers are particularly encouraged. All candidates must possess a holistic understanding of the filmmaking process and demonstrate practical expertise in audio-visual storytelling for film and emerging media.

A strong track record in professional industry practice and/or practice-based research, alongside evidence of creative excellence and critical engagement with contemporary screen cultures is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate an up-to-date understanding of contemporary film production and distribution practices, including emerging developments in streaming, transmedia ecosystems, AI-generated content (AIGC), and evolving creative workflows and technologies.

Teaching experience is indispensable, and a strong university-level teaching track record will be regarded favourably.

The role requires maintaining a balanced portfolio across practice-led research and teaching in Filmmaking, and the appointee will be expected to maintain an active internationally recognised profile.

The role requires sustained creative practice-led research within filmmaking, with expectations of international impact and recognition for artistic excellence. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a strong balance across research and teaching which includes curriculum development and student mentorship.

Senior candidates appointed at the Associate Professor level will also be expected to provide academic leadership and contribute actively to committees, programme development, and other service roles within the University, mentor junior faculty members and offer professional services to schools, to the Singapore Ministry of Education, and to other public education-related organizations if requested.
