Job summary

The European Spallation Source ERIC invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Engineer in robotics and computer vision to work on the ASTRIND project and develop an automated sample alignment system for the BEER instrument.

The role blends robotics, software development and experimental work, with emphasis on system integration with EPICS/NICOS, multi-view vision, and a BEER digital twin. This is a fixed-term position for three years, with occasional travel to project partners.

Qualifications

• Strong background in robotics, mechatronics, automatic control, computer vision or closely related field.
• PhD or engineering degree with relevant professional experience.
• Strong programming and software engineering skills, particularly in Python and C/C++, Linux, Git, and ROS.
• Experience with CAD software and mechanical system design.
• Experience integrating robotic systems with scientific/industrial control systems, machine vision, motion planning, and digital-twin environments.

Responsibilities

• Design the system architecture (robot, cameras, auxiliary equipment) and specify hardware within budget.
• Lead the integration of the sample robot, cameras, and subsystems with EPICS and NICOS.
• Define data handling and user interfaces for automated alignment during experiments.
• Plan, execute testing, commissioning, and validation of the system.
• Write technical documentation.
