Job description

Quality Engineer

Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!

What we do at Blykalla

Blykalla is a Swedish deep‑tech company at the forefront of the nuclear industry, pioneering the development of small modular reactors that provide clean, safe, and reliable energy. Thanks to lead‑cooling, we achieve high safety in a very compact format, allowing for a simple and cost‑effective design that can be mass‑produced. Our unique reactor design will provide safe and green baseload energy that perfectly complements solar and wind power.

What you’ll get to do

We are seeking a Quality Engineer to support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Blykalla’s quality management and quality assurance framework. The role is suited to a hands‑on quality professional who can work across engineering, testing, procurement, suppliers, and documentation while helping build a strong quality culture in a growing technology organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Quality Manager in developing, implementing, and improving Blykalla’s quality assurance program, processes, and procedures.
  • Work with engineering teams to ensure quality requirements are defined, understood, and integrated into design, testing, procurement, and manufacturing‑related activities.
  • Develop, review, and maintain quality plans, inspection and test plans, procedures, forms, checklists, and associated quality records.
  • Support internal audits, supplier audits, and readiness assessments; help track findings through corrective action to timely closure.
  • Coordinate nonconformance management, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and lessons learned across the organization.
  • Help ensure appropriate traceability, document control, records retention, and configuration awareness for quality‑related activities.
  • Support supplier qualification, supplier performance monitoring, and review of supplier‑provided quality documentation.
  • Assist R&D and test teams in ensuring that test activities are planned, executed, documented, and retained in a controlled and auditable manner.
  • Promote a practical quality culture that balances technical innovation with disciplined execution, objective evidence, and learning from issues.
  • Contribute to management reporting, KPI development, and continuous improvement initiatives related to quality performance.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, materials science, manufacturing, quality, nuclear engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Approximately 3 or more years of experience in quality engineering, quality assurance, manufacturing quality, supplier quality, or a similar role.
  • Experience working in a regulated or technically demanding industry such as nuclear, aerospace, energy, automotive, medical device, defense, or process industry.
  • Understanding of quality management principles, document control, traceability, inspection planning, nonconformance handling, and corrective action processes.
  • Experience with root cause analysis methods such as 5 Why, Ishikawa, FMEA, or equivalent structured problem‑solving techniques.
  • Ability to review technical documentation and communicate effectively with engineers, project teams, inspectors, and suppliers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Meritorious Skills
  • Experience from the nuclear sector or from organizations preparing for stricter regulatory or customer‑driven quality requirements.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 and familiarity with ASME NQA‑1 or equivalent high‑assurance quality standards.
  • Experience supporting test facilities, prototype development, materials programs, or first‑of‑a‑kind engineering environments.
  • Experience with supplier quality, audits, and procurement quality requirements.
  • Relevant certification such as ASQ CQE, CQA, lead auditor training, or similar.
Who you are
  • Structured, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working with both technical details and organizational interfaces.
  • Pragmatic and improvement‑oriented, with the ability to build robust processes without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Confident in raising issues early and supporting teams in resolving them constructively.
  • Collaborative and service‑minded, with the ability to work effectively in a fast‑moving R&D and project environment.
  • Committed to quality, safety, traceability, and professional integrity.
What Success Looks Like in the Role
  • Quality requirements are embedded earlier in projects rather than added late.
  • Nonconformances and recurring issues are identified quickly, analyzed effectively, and reduced over time.
  • Engineering, testing, and supplier activities produce clearer objective evidence and more complete records.
  • Audit readiness and document maturity improve steadily as Blykalla moves toward higher‑assurance ways of working.
