Job description

What We Do At Blykalla

Blykalla is developing the next generation of nuclear technology with our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) based on innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden’s only SMR developer, we are on a mission to decarbonise industries and enable safe, scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our technology uses uranium nitride fuel and lead coolant, creating novel challenges and opportunities for the fuel cycle and supporting systems.

What You’ll Get To Do

We are seeking a dynamic Materials Engineer with powder expertise to join our Materials team. This role is pivotal in advancing our materials know‑how, focusing on the development, qualification, and industrialisation of powder materials and additive manufacturing crucial for our SMR technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Materials Expertise and Advancement: Drive the transition of new powder materials from concept to industry, navigating challenges from lab to application. Harness deep knowledge in alloying concepts, powder steel production processes, and additive material processes such as 3‑D printing and HIP, to guide material qualification and industrialisation.
  • Strategic Qualification Planning and Execution: You will spearhead the strategic planning and meticulous execution of technical material qualifications in collaboration with our suppliers and partners. Your leadership in this area will ensure that our material development efforts are innovative, compliant and tailored to meet the exacting demands of our projects.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Apply an in‑depth understanding of nuclear industry regulations to the material qualification process, ensuring compliance and translating regulatory requirements into actionable company‑specific steps.
  • Collaborative Cost Management: Work closely with the supply chain team to maintain a design‑to‑cost approach throughout development and industrialisation, balancing cost efficiency and quality assurance.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Provide regular updates to the Team Manager and other projects you are involved in, on progress, challenges and any issues, ensuring transparent communication and stakeholder involvement.
Who You Are
  • Functional Experience: Proven track record in technical project management, material engineering, or production quality, preferably within highly regulated industries such as nuclear, automotive, aviation or space. Experience within the steel industry, preferably in product development and industrialisation.
  • Qualifications: Engineering degree with a relevant specialization to material science. Background in advanced steel alloys, corrosion, testing, welding and additive manufacturing. Experience in the steel industry working closely with suppliers on material development and a practical understanding of material qualification processes.
  • Fluency in Swedish and English, spoken and written.
