Job summary

Ericsson Lund is building Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) software for 6G. We are seeking newly graduated engineers at the start of their career to help write it and ship real software, not just demos.

You will work at the two points where sensing changes a base station, designing and implementing in C or C++ close to the hardware, and aligning with 3GPP specs for real-time processing on multi-core DSPs.

Qualifications

  • MSc in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering physics, wireless communication or similar.
  • C or C++ close to the hardware; strong math for signal processing.
  • A project you built because you wanted to build it, not because it was assigned.
  • Comfort working where the answer is not known yet.

Responsibilities

  • Participate at the points where sensing changes a base station: the radio data path and the scheduling/move path (upper physical layer, uplink and downlink processing).
  • Contribute to a design that works on Ericsson’s many-core baseband hardware and standard servers.
  • Write and test in C or C++ close to the hardware; follow 3GPP specifications for real-time, multi-core DSPs.

Skills

MSc in CS
C/C++ close to hardware
Hands-on project-built
Comfort with unknowns

Education

MSc or equivalent in STEM

About This Opportunity

Teach a base station to see?

A 5G radio already transmits and receives with extraordinary precision. Point that capability at the world instead of at a phone, and the network becomes a sensor: a drone over a city, a truck picked out from a car — detected by radios already standing on masts and rooftops, with no new hardware.

That is Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), and it is one of the capabilities that will define 6G. We are building it in Lund, as a product, heading for its first release. Not a research demo. Not a paper. Software that ships.

Which means the interesting decisions are still open. A radio has a fixed amount of time, spectrum and processing to spend, and it now has two jobs instead of one. Nobody has settled how it should divide them. Join in three years and you inherit that answer — the people writing it now include engineers who started here last year.

We are looking for newly graduated engineers at the start of their career to help write it.

What You Will Do

You will work at the two points where sensing actually changes a base station: where the radio turns energy into data, and where that data is scheduled and moved — the upper physical layer, and the uplink and downlink processing chains. Sensing changes both at once, which is why one team owns both instead of handing work between specialists.

The same capability also has to hold on two very different machines: Ericsson's own many-core baseband hardware, and standard commercial servers. What is cheap on one is expensive on the other. Making a single design work on both is an open problem here, not a solved one you would be maintaining.

We will also be honest about the difficulty. Real-time C and C++ under microsecond deadlines, against 3GPP specifications, on multi-core DSPs, is unforgiving work — and it is exactly where a confident wrong answer from a language model looks identical to a correct one. So we treat working with AI as an engineering skill to be learned rather than a tool to be handed out, and the scarce part of that skill is judgment: knowing which answers to trust, which to verify, and which to throw away.

The product is new. The craft is not — this is baseband software engineering, and it looks like this:

  • Take part in a study to work out what a new feature has to do, and where it fits in the system around it.
  • Read the 3GPP specification behind it and turn that into something a radio can actually meet.
  • Explore parts of a large C++ code base you have never seen before, and work out how they fit together.
  • Design the solution, then implement it in C or C++ close to the hardware.
  • Test it, improve the test environment you needed in order to test it, and hunt the bugs that only appear on real hardware.
The Skills You Bring
  • An MSc in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering physics, wireless communication or similar.
  • C or C++ close to the hardware, and enough mathematics to be unafraid of a signal.
  • Something you have built because you wanted to build it, not because it was assigned.
  • Comfort working where the answer is not known yet.

You do not need to be an expert in telecom - several people on these teams arrived from entirely different domains. We will teach you the standard; we cannot teach you curiosity.
