About the role

Are you a friendly, organised and reliable person with excellent customer service skills? Would you like a public-facing role where you can make a difference in your community?

Cambridgeshire Libraries provide a vital information service to local communities. Books are part of the service, but even more important is providing a warm welcome to a diverse range of customers. Our libraries are safe, non-judgemental community spaces where customers are supported to access the resources and information they need.

You will assist and deputise for the Area Library Managers in the day-to-day running of Cambridge City libraries, supporting with operational responsibilities and staff management.

No two days are the same - you could be staffing our UKVCAS service point and co-ordinating a library event one day or timetabling staff and displaying new stock the next. This varied role combines customer service with administrative work and supervisory responsibilities.

Please note that library work is physically demanding; see the Job Hazards information for more details.

About you

Your customer service skills will be as strong as your administrative capabilities. We are looking for someone who is excellent at multi-tasking, resourceful and willing to lead a team.

You must be able to travel across Cambridge as the ability to work at any of the libraries in the district is essential. You will need to work flexibly, with a requirement for some lone, weekend and evening working.

For a full list of the requirements of the role, please see the Job Description & Person Specification.

We want to recognise and celebrate the diversity of our local communities and be responsive to their needs. We therefore encourage applications from all areas of our community.

Skill and Experience Requirements
  • An understanding of delivering good customer service.
  • A methodical, accurate and consistent approach to your work, particularly regarding administrative skills.
  • Demonstrable interpersonal skills, including patience and listening with an ability to establish exactly what the customer requires.
  • A strong team player, able to work with colleagues on projects and contribute to team goals.
  • An ability to work under pressure and with limited supervision
  • Strong ICT skills, particularly using Microsoft Office (Word and email) and assessing the value of information on the Internet.
