Job Purpose / Objective
The Welding Superintendent is responsible for all welding related jobs within the assigned projects for the structural department for Zone A, whether for rigs or vessels or other internal work in the yard. Supervises all welding activities in the workshop and/or onboard and ensures that related works are carried out safely, on time and in accordance with customers satisfaction and International Maritime Industries Management System (IMIMS).
The role involves working closely with the Senior Welding Superintendent, Structural Superintendents, Welding and Structural Supervisors, Project Managers, QC, Welding Engineers, Safety and Gas Inspectors, Project Managers, production teams or other internal departments as required to ensure that all assigned scopes are executed as described above.
Ensures production line efficiency and proper housekeeping whether in workshop or onboard and when required prepares man-hours and timeframes estimates for production/projects. Solution orientation and doing it right the first-time mindset is a must, with a proactive approach of solving issues before they become problems.
Key Accountabilities
- Adhere to reinforce, and promote IMI Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Policies
- Attend the daily departmental meetings to update the Structural Manager regarding the projects progress status and any serious matters in terms of equipment & tools, consumables, and lack of resources preventing the welding section from achieving the projects deadline. Receive and follow the instructions from the Structural Manager regarding priority of the projects and their critical paths by allocating the workshop workforce accordingly.
- Hold daily meetings with the welding supervisors to ensure that the welders work on the right priorities, check the physical progress of the work, provide technical advice.
- Develop comprehensive project/production plans, including detailed schedules, and resource allocation.
- Provide sound and good knowledge on various types of welding works on vessels and rigs.
- Ensure all repair and maintenance works are carried out in accordance with the approved procedures WPS, projects specifications, and the proper welding sequences by meeting the required quality standards and regulatory requirements. Lead and manage welding supervisors, foremen, charge-hands, welders including subcontractors.
- Ensure, in conjunction with the Procurement-Supply Chain Group, that all materials and equipment are procured and delivered in accordance with the production and projects contract requirements.
- Ensure effective and consistent interaction with other production superintendents as required.
- Monitor actual man-hours against budgeted man-hours and take appropriate steps to correct overruns. Control the overtime to contribute to the best projects and gross margins.
- Ensure that the welding supervisors book the correct hours/timesheets for the right project orders and job numbers for a proper project cost capturing and cost control.
- Check and monitor the welding consumable waste and introduce the weld maps for quality control and statistical records, defects analysis regarding performance of welders.
- Ensure availability of all necessary welding equipment, tools, as well as the special welding consumables to be in good working condition and being calibrated without exceeding the expiry date.
- Facilitate training and development of welders, conduct a trade test whenever it is necessary.
- Liaise with the engineering department regarding qualifying and certifying the trainee welders by the class. Liaise with other trades to ensure project schedule adherence.
- Accountable for delivery of all Inspection Test Records (ITR’s) under the relevant discipline by effectively delegating them to the team.
- Visit regularly project work whether in workshops, onboard, in docks, other open areas where welding activities are taking place to check on progress and give technical advice and guidance. Ensure all control measures are in place for safety, environmental aspects and housekeeping.

Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or diploma with extensive relative experience.
Professional Qualifications (Certifications & Accreditations)
- Marine-related professional qualifications or relevant time served.
- Relevant certifications in steel manufacturing or shipbuilding are advantageous.
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
- In-depth knowledge of all welding processes, techniques, and materials used in MRO for ships and rigs in a shipyard environment. Familiarity with relevant industry standards, quality control procedures, and dimensional tolerances.
- Proven experience in production planning, scheduling, and resource allocation. Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet project timelines.
- Dealing with a multi-cultural environment
- Sound understanding of Engineering drawings
- Sound knowledge on tools/equipment’s and consumables and material grades. Application of best repair practices with quality control and assurance. Welding defects analysis, records keeping.
- Understanding of Asset Management & ERP systems, and ISO Standards.
- Strong leadership level, managerial skills, problem solving and strong decision-making abilities.

- Excellent communication skills (written & oral).
- Physically fit and able to work in extreme climatic conditions.
Experience
- At least 9 years’ experience for degree holders and 15 years’ experience for diploma holders in the Ship repair companies, Oil & Gas Industry, shipyard environment with real depth in steel works
Languages
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in the English Language.
