Key Accountabilities
Systems & Documentation
- Develop the underground mine surveying systems and procedures according to industry best practices
- Ensure all technical documentation, templates, reports, guidelines are clear and accurate.
- Maintain the survey database and drawing standards (naming, layers, revisions) to corporate conventions.
Survey Control & Execution
- Design, install and verify primary and secondary control underground; and conduct regular check surveys and calibration to maintain data accuracy.
- Deliver set‑outs for Maaden and sub-contractors outside of the scope of the mining contractor (geological drilling, construction etc.) and perform QA/QC checks to confirm as‑built conformance.
- Perform QA/QC checks on the underground mining contractor’s surveying and mining works.
- Complete pickups and laser/CMS/lidar scans of headings, stopes and voids; update the void model and produce reconciliation against designs for dilution, over/under‑break plan compliance, and contractor payment certificates.
- Implement best practice technology and surveying methods (e.g., Drones/Lidar/CMS/laser scanning workflows, streamlined data exchanges with mine planning software).
Planning, Integration and Support
- Provide timely survey inputs to weekly/monthly plans and sequencing; issue clear survey notes/mark‑ups supporting safe, executable work.
- Maintain an up to date and accurate survey as-built database; inclusive of voids, services and all relevant information to inform accurate and safe mine planning.
- Collaborate and review plans with technical services teams to ensure designs and instructions are practical and compliant with operating standards and procedures.
- Conduct project due diligence, identifying risks, opportunities, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Safety & Compliance
- Live the Maaden values and promote a safety‑first culture.
- Keep statutory and emergency plans are up to date (underground plans, escapeways/refuge, services, survey control, ventilation flow) and ensure traceable revisions for audits and inspections.
- Adhere to health, safety, and environmental policies.
- Conduct regular audits and risk assessments.
- Manage and calibrate survey instruments, including total stations and laser scanners.
Reporting & Governance
- Compile End‑of‑Month survey packs: development and stope as‑builts, CMS volumes, reconciliation dashboards, plan‑vs‑actual variance commentary.
- Manage document control for drawings and records; maintain data quality suitable for external reporting (regulatory inspections, technical studies, MSHEM compliance inspections, etc.).
Continuous Improvement
- Implement best practice technology and surveying methods (e.g., Lidar/CMS/laser scanning workflows; streamlined data exchanges with planning tools) and optimise turnaround from field to issuable mark‑ups.
- Identify and promote initiatives to improve efficiency and reduce cost.
Leadership & Mentoring
- Mentor and guide junior surveyors, engineers and non‑technical staff, fostering technical and professional development.
Support
- Provide technical support to operations, ensuring alignment with production goals and standards.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and recommendations for management.
- Any other duties as required to achieve operational goals.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Surveying or Geomatics or related field.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in underground mining operations performing a mine surveying function.
- Strong knowledge of industry best practices for underground mine surveying.
- Proven ability to work in a systemized manner and establish procedures, guidelines and detailed technical documentation.
Skills
- Highly skilled with surveying hardware inclusive of total stations, drones, Lidar, GPS, CMS/laser scanning, and underground control network tools.
- Highly skilled with underground surveying software inclusive of Deswik, Surpac, and point cloud processing software.
- Strong knowledge of underground mining methods, techniques, and equipment, with experience in longhole open stoping and paste filling.
