Job summary

Buro Happold Riyadh is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the electrical design of complex building-services projects, from concept through handover. You will co-ordinate with multidisciplinary teams and apply Saudi Arabian and regional standards to deliver energy-efficient, integrated systems that meet performance and sustainability goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Significant post-graduate experience in electrical building-services engineering, ideally within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment.
• Experience delivering electrical designs for complex buildings (commercial, hospitality, residential, cultural, healthcare, education, aviation, transport or large-scale mixed-use developments).
• Strong understanding of electrical power systems, lighting, emergency systems, standby generation, UPS, earthing, lightning protection and ELV interfaces.
• Experience coordinating MEP services within architect-led and multidisciplinary design teams.
• Working knowledge of Saudi Arabia and wider Middle East electrical codes and authority requirements.
• Proficiency in design/analysis software, such as Revit, AutoCAD, electrical calculation software and BIM coordination tools.
• Experience preparing specifications, reports, calculations, drawings and tender documentation.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• Ability to manage priorities and work independently; collaborative team player.
• Professional membership or progress toward chartership desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead the electrical design of building-services systems for complex new-build, refurbishment and mixed-use developments.

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will play a key technical and delivery role within our Riyadh Buildings team. You will lead the design and coordination of electrical building-services systems across a diverse portfolio of projects, supporting project delivery from early concept and feasibility through detailed design, construction and handover.

You will work closely with mechanical, public health, sustainability, structures, fire, façade, lighting, digital and specialist design teams, as well as architects, contractors and clients. You will bring sound engineering judgement, strong technical capability and a proactive approach to problem-solving in a multidisciplinary design environment.

Your key duties

• Lead the electrical design of building-services systems for complex new-build, refurbishment and mixed-use developments.
• Develop coordinated electrical design solutions across all project stages, including concept, schematic, detailed design, tender and construction support.
• Design and specify low-voltage power distribution, lighting, emergency lighting, small power, earthing and lightning protection, standby power, UPS systems, and ELV/ICT interfaces as applicable.
• Produce and review electrical calculations, technical reports, specifications, drawings, schedules and design documentation.
• Ensure electrical systems are integrated with the architectural design, building fabric and wider MEP strategy to support high-performing, energy-efficient internal environments.
• Coordinate closely with mechanical, public health, sustainability and specialist consultants to resolve interfaces and deliver fully coordinated designs.
• Apply relevant Saudi Arabian, regional and international codes, standards and authority requirements throughout the design process.
• Support energy-conscious design decisions, including the evaluation of alternative systems, energy-saving opportunities, lifecycle considerations and future adaptability.
• Lead technical reviews, quality assurance processes and design risk management for electrical deliverables.
• Provide clear technical guidance, mentoring and day-to-day support to graduate and junior engineers.
• Attend client, design-team and site meetings; communicate design intent, technical risks, opportunities and solutions with clarity and confidence.
• Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, material proposals and technical queries during construction-stage services.
• Support project planning, resource coordination, programme management and commercial delivery within agreed scope, fee and timescales.
• Contribute to the continued development of Buro Happold’s technical excellence, design culture and knowledge-sharing across the Buildings practice.

Qualifications

You are a technically strong and collaborative electrical building-services engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of design quality, sustainability and practical delivery. You can translate complex engineering requirements into clear, coordinated and commercially viable solutions.

You will ideally have:

• A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Significant post-graduate experience in electrical building-services engineering, ideally within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment.
• Demonstrable experience delivering electrical designs for complex buildings, such as commercial, hospitality, residential, cultural, healthcare, education, aviation, transport or large-scale mixed-use developments.
• Strong technical understanding of electrical power systems, lighting, emergency systems, standby generation, UPS, earthing, lightning protection and relevant ELV interfaces.
• Experience coordinating MEP services within architect-led and multidisciplinary design teams.
• Working knowledge of relevant electrical codes, standards and authority requirements applicable to projects in Saudi Arabia and the wider Middle East.
• Proficiency in relevant design and analysis software, such as Revit, AutoCAD, electrical calculation software and BIM coordination tools.
• Experience preparing specifications, reports, calculations, drawings and tender documentation.
• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the confidence to engage directly with clients, architects, contractors and authorities.
• The ability to manage priorities, work independently when required and contribute positively within a collaborative team.
• Professional membership or progress toward chartership/registration with a recognised engineering institution is desirable.
