Project Engineering Manager (Substation)
The Project Engineering Manager (PEM) is responsible for ensuring all engineering activities are executed within the stipulated timeline, quality standards, and cost targets. The role ensures adherence to project schedules, supports optimization initiatives, and enables timely project delivery with positive margins.
The PEM will lead interdisciplinary coordination (Civil, Structural, MEP, and Instrumentation), manage resources and man-hours, and provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate with the Project Planning Manager to align engineering deliverables with project schedules
- Conduct regular project review meetings and ensure schedule adherence
- Perform internal resource planning and optimization to improve productivity
- Allocate work and manage man-hours across engineering disciplines
- Manage multitasking requirements across multiple projects
Design & Technical Oversight
- Review engineering designs, calculations, and drawings for quality and timely submission
- Resolve inter-discipline design issues and provide technical clarifications
- Review quantities and enable accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) preparation
- Address critical design issues and procedural delays; support site execution teams
- Ensure BIM implementation across projects
- Coordinate with vendors on technical clarifications and ensure timely material delivery
- Support procurement and supply chain teams for vendor engineering finalization
- Review vendor technical evaluations against project specifications
- Facilitate manufacturing clearances through coordination with suppliers
Commercial & Contractual Support
- Support BOQ preparation, pre-bid technical evaluations, and post-tender clarifications
- Assist contracts teams with technical inputs after vendor clarifications
- Support site teams on commercial issues and bill processing
- Lead and manage Design Leads, Design Engineers, and Drafting teams
- Support skill development, productivity improvement, and succession planning
Technical Expertise Required
- Strong expertise in Primary and Secondary Engineering for substation projects
- In-depth knowledge of GIS / AIS substations up to 765 kV
- Proficiency in selection and application of equipment such as:
- Power Transformers
- Reactors
- Circuit Breakers
- Disconnectors
- Instrument Transformers
- Earthing, lighting, lightning protection, cabling
- Interfaces between Civil, MEP, and Instrumentation
- Ability to interpret contractual technical requirements and support project execution
- Experience handling projects across different geographies and utilities
- Strong interviewing and team evaluation skills
