Job description

Job Purpose / Objective

To execute and control electrical isolation and de-isolation activities in support of the Permit to Work (PTW) system, ensuring the safe preparation, verification, and restoration of electrical systems for high-risk work. The role coordinates PTW processes from the Control Room and field, verifies isolation documentation and LOTO compliance, and ensures safe energization and de-energization in line with IMI procedures, with authority to hold or refuse permits where safety requirements are not met.

Key Accountabilities
  • Execute electrical isolations and de-isolations (switching and switching supervision where applicable) for PTW-controlled work, in accordance with IMI Electrical Isolation and LOTO procedures.
  • Prepare, verify, and implement switching programs and isolation plans, including identification of all energy sources, isolation points, back-feeds, interlocks, and stored energy hazards.
  • Apply and control LOTO devices (locks, tags, lock boxes) and ensure personal locks are applied/removed only by the authorized personnel; maintain key control and lock box integrity where used.
  • Verify zero-energy state before work starts (e.g., test for absence of voltage/test-before-touch as applicable) and confirm isolation effectiveness at the point of work, documenting results in the isolation certificate.
  • Issue, update, maintain electrical isolation certificates and associated registers, ensuring permit activation only occurs when isolations are completed, verified, and correctly documented.
  • Control and track long-term and complex isolations (including shift handover), ensuring continuity of LOTO control, status boards/registers accuracy, and formal handover/acceptance.
  • Conduct routine field verification that isolation points, tags, barriers, and PTW postings match approved documentation, and correct discrepancies prior to work continuation.
  • Coordinate with Issuing Authorities (IA) and Performing Authorities (PA) to manage SIMOPS conflicts, prevent inadvertent energization, and ensure isolations remain effective throughout the job.
  • Suspend PTW and stop isolation/de-isolation activities when unsafe conditions, uncontrolled energy, inadequate documentation, or deviation from the switching plan is identified; elevate and resume only when controls are established and authorised by procedure.
  • Execute safe restoration and reenergization, including removal of LOTO in the correct sequence, confirmation that work is complete and area is safe, update of certificates/registers, and formal hand back to operations/IA and closure of associated permits.
