Director, Computational Statistics, Human Genetics and Genomics

GSK seeks an innovative scientist to lead genomic statistical analysis within the Human Genetics and Genomics (HGG) department. The role integrates deep computational and statistical methods to guide drug discovery, development, pipeline decisions and therapeutic area portfolio across GSK.

Location

On‑site office presence required at one of GSK US (PA or MA), UK (Stevenage) or Germany (Heidelberg) – minimum two days a week.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain clear understanding of scientific needs of key partners in applied and translational teams across HGG, Target Discovery, Research Units and Clinical Development.
• Remain up‑to‑date on mature and emerging computational statistics and machine learning capabilities, collaborating with Biostatistics, Data Automation, Predictive Sciences and AIML departments.
• Identify scientific questions in human genetics and genomics that impact GSK portfolio and pipeline decision‑making, formulating them as statistical problems.
• Develop suitable computational methods, implement robust software that scales in cloud compute environments, and contribute to team culture of innovation and continuous learning.
• Lead and inspire team members, plan and assess human and computational resources necessary for project objectives.

Basic Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent advanced degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
• Substantial research experience demonstrating innovative application of statistical approaches to drug discovery or development using genomic/data genetics, and critical evaluation, improvement or development of machine learning methodology.
• Strong programming skills in R and/or Python, familiarity with reproducible research, literate programming, FAIR data principles and agile software development; proficiency in distributed or cloud computing technologies.
• Strong theoretical foundation in computational statistics, statistical and machine learning, with ability to solve scientific questions not easily mapped to existing solutions.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, influencing and leadership skills; proven delivery of complex, impactful projects and coordination of multidisciplinary teams.
