Blip, a Flutter Entertainment company, seeks a Senior Database Engineer to optimize and scale our distributed database estate (Elasticsearch, Cassandra, PostgreSQL) across US, UK and Portugal. You will design scalable Elasticsearch clusters, tune queries, manage backups, and collaborate with DevOps and software engineers to ensure 24x7 availability.

The role requires 5+ years in database engineering, deep NoSQL/SQL expertise, and strong scripting in Python or Shell.

Qualificações

• 5+ years’ experience as a Database Engineer or similar role.
• In-depth knowledge of NoSQL and SQL clustered databases (Cassandra, Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL).
• Expertise in Elasticsearch is required as well as a background in Cassandra.
• Design and implement scalable Elasticsearch clusters to support high-traffic, data-intensive applications.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and tune Elasticsearch performance, including query optimization, shard management, and cluster scaling.
• Develop and maintain indexing strategies, mappings, and search schemas that optimize performance.
• Ensure data security and compliance by managing access control, encryption, and data retention policies.
• Evaluate and implement new technologies and best practices to enhance data reliability and scalability.
• Background in data modelling, database design and performance optimization.
• Knowledge of Linux (Amazon Linux and Rocky are used here);
• Shell Scripting (essential), Python (extremely good to have), Java (good to have);
• Knowledge of AWS technologies and cloud-based CLIs;
• Experience with diagnostic log aggregation software such as DataDog;
• Experience working with automation software such as Ansible;
• Ability to define and implement replication and redundancy policies;
• Experience working with a high concurrency/transactional/available systems;

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Database Engineer to expand our team, that is geographically distributed between US, UK and now Portugal. Alongside the team, you will be responsible for the stability, scalability and performance of our database estate: currently we work with Informix, MySQL, Elastic Search and Cassandra. In addition, the team will be assuming responsibility for PostgreSQL as new applications are being developed using that technology. While the role emphasizes NoSQL clustered databases that can be horizontally scaled, the philosophy of the team is to cross-train on different technologies.

What You'll be Doing

We hope you have…
