Job summary

ISS, a Portuguese marine biotech startup, seeks a Lab Technician to execute seaweed extraction procedures and perform quality control analyses on raw, intermediate, and final products. You will collaborate with the Extraction Department Lead and R&D Manager in a fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications

• BSc or Technical Diploma in Biology, Biotechnology, Food Science, Chemistry, or related field.
• Experience with basic laboratory techniques (pipetting, weighing, solution preparation).
• Familiarity with microbiological methods (plating, counting, aseptic technique).
• Knowledge of biochemical assays and spectrophotometric analysis.
• Ability to follow SOPs and maintain accurate lab records.
• Strong attention to detail, organisation, and data reliability.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform extraction protocols (food/cosmetic-grade methods).
• Conduct routine quality control analyses including microbiological and biochemical assays and organoleptic evaluation.
• Accurately record, process, and report experimental and Quality Control data.
• Support sample preparation, labelling, and storage.
• Ensure proper cleaning, sanitisation, and storage of laboratory materials, equipment, and installations.
• Assist in equipment and SOP compliance; safety and hygiene.
• Assist receipt, identification and storage of materials and reagents, ensuring safety and traceability.
• Support stock management and replenishment.
• Collaborate with R&D team in troubleshooting and process optimization.
