Job summary

INESC TEC is offering a 6‑month grant in Porto, Portugal, for a First Stage Researcher focused on RISC‑V educational cores and open‑source EDA integration. The project supports the POEMS initiative and provides a monthly maintenance stipend with health insurance.

The candidate will develop materials, testbenches, and exercises to help students understand digital design, RISC‑V architectures, and open‑source toolchains, with a pathway to renewal for up to one year.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or enrollment in a master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
• Fluency in Portuguese and English, spoken and written.
• Knowledge of digital systems and computer architecture.
• Experience with Verilog/SystemVerilog and digital hardware simulation.
• Knowledge of C/C++ programming and familiarity with RISC‑V.
• Interest in open-source EDA tools and hardware development.

Responsibilities

• Identify and select a simple state-of-the-art open-source RISC‑V core suitable for educational purposes and adapt its structure, code, and interfaces to course requirements.
• Modularize and document main processor components—register file, decoder, ALU, control, and memory—and prepare exercises for progressive understanding and modification.
• Develop automated testbenches, small RISC‑V programs, and reference implementations to validate components and the complete processor.
• Prepare examples of custom instructions and integrate materials into the open-source EDA flow used in the POEMS course.
