Role
Practice Lead – Location: UK or Portugal | Department: Engineering | Employment Type: Permanent
This is an engineering leadership role with a strong people focus—owning hiring, retention, and development within your team. The role is non-billable, allowing you to focus on improving workflows, supporting team operations, and contributing to the long-term success of YLD's engineering organisation.
About You
You have strong technical acumen with a genuine passion for people. You are looking to continue on a management or engineering leadership track—or take your first steps into leadership. You are passionate about engineering, but above all, you care about the human side of it. You understand that software delivery at scale requires processes, coordination, and documentation. You are excited about creating an environment of trust, curiosity, and collaboration while driving consistent, high-quality delivery across our projects.
Responsibilities
- Development and Impact: Act as a role model and trusted advisor; guide and support your team through challenges, frustrations, and successes alike.
- Help team members set meaningful development and career goals; empower growth.
- Own skill development within your vertical and build growth pathway frameworks; ensure 100% of the team has a clear growth path.
- Recommend relevant training and materials; manage training budget requests aligned with development and work goals.
- Lead performance reviews; make recommendations for growth, promotions, and salary calibrations.
- Manage mentor assignments and coach Managers in leading others effectively.
- Guide probation, orientation, and full employee lifecycle including off-boarding.
- Keep the team informed on company policies and procedures; foster open, clear communication.
- Address performance or conduct challenges early, working with Client Partners and People Team.
- Coordinate bench support and engage engineers in learning opportunities during downtime.
- Technical Delivery & Client Partnership: Partner with Client Services to oversee all technical aspects of delivery; ensure client satisfaction and team happiness.
- Maintain delivery standards and quality across your team.
- Build and maintain relationships with client stakeholders; document technical decisions, value delivered, and learnings.
- Collaborate with other Practice Leads to source technical expertise; bring thought leadership to projects.
- Recruitment & Onboarding: Plan and execute recruitment strategies with Talent, Head of Engineering, and Client Services; develop interview frameworks and onboarding plans; ensure alignment on strategy and criteria; track recruitment progress.
Culture & Collaboration
- Lead with values-driven approach; build psychological safety through open and clear communication.
- Build strong relationships within your vertical and the wider team.
- Recognise signs of stress or ill health; create space for team wellbeing.
- Collaborate with Marketing to showcase impact; support proposals and proofs-of-concept.
Documentation & Strategic Initiatives
- Drive comprehensive documentation for best practices and guidelines; document client and project work for marketing and knowledge
- Support long-term strategic projects and scaling initiatives; identify opportunities to improve productivity and workflows.

Recruitment Process

- Technical interview with Senior Developers (about 1h30).
