Job Title: Backend Web Developer (remote working)Location: Wherever you are, Portugal

Network Locum is a Brick Lane based startup, using the web to create an online marketplace that brings together GP practices and locum doctors looking for work. We've been featured in the Guardian, Sunday Times and City AM. We've been seeing incredible growth month-on-month and have a challenging roadmap for the next year.

We are looking for an experienced backend web developer who is excited to make well written, performant websites using the best in open source technology. As a backend web developer you'll work directly with the CTO and the rest of the web development team in a collaborative manner to implement to design and implement new parts of the site, as well as tracking down problems and fixing bugs.

Our main office is in London, but you'll be working from home in Portugal. There'll be opportunites for you to meet the rest of the team in person, either in the UK or in Portugal. All of our development team speak Portuguese, so you don't need to be confident in speaking or writing English, but basic reading is required.

As a Backend Developer at Network Locum, your job will include the following:

Within 30 days, become an integral part of the Network Locum development team

  • Work collaboratively with the development team to get a feel for and learn about the Network Locum development process
  • Clone code repositories and configure development environments running Django projects
  • Make pull requests and implement feedback from code reviews
  • Communicate through email, Skype and instant messenger to the rest of the team
  • Deploy your changes to development servers frequently

Within 60 days, take ownership of development tasks and expand knowledge

  • Implement new pages & features in the site
  • Identify and fix user-reported bugs
  • Code review other developers' work
  • Write server side views and templates to serve new pages in the website

Within 6 months, be able to work independently

  • Make changes to our API to support new mobile apps and integration partners
  • Suggest and implement improvements to our development processes
  • Become proficient in our full tech stack
  • Working on ops tasks (such as infrastructure changes)

Qualifications

  • Comfortable with technology and ability to rapidly learn new tools
  • 1 year+ web development experience (either in your day job, or in your personal projects)
  • Degree in Computer Science or similar
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest going on in Open Source tech
  • Able to read basic English

Bonus Points for

  • Knowledge of version control (Git, Mercurial)
  • Experience working with Django or other Open Source web frameworks (Ruby-on-rails)
  • Experience of NoSQL technologies (MongoDB, CouchDB,)
  • Comfortable using templating languages (Mustache, Django templates)
  • Experience of HTML/CSS and/or Twitter Bootstrap
  • Experience with server management tools (Puppet, Chef)
  • Contributing to Open Source projects
  • Attending open‑source community events, like DjangoCon, NodeJS conferences, etc
