Job summary

Smartex in Porto, Portugal, is offering a Master's Thesis internship in Machine Learning for AI-assisted image segmentation and labeling systems. You will join the Software Team to develop backend services, design intelligent labeling assistants, and integrate them with the labeling tool.

Collaboration with data scientists and product teams is expected. The role emphasizes experimentation, data integration, and robust testing in a fast-paced startup environment.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Informatics, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
• Proficiency in Python for backend development and machine learning development.
• Experience or familiarity with data pipelines, data preprocessing, and model evaluation techniques.

Responsibilities

• Backend Development: Develop and maintain backend services to integrate SAM2/SAM3-like models into the internal labeling tool, enabling mask suggestion and auto-labeling capabilities.
• AI‑Assisted Labeling Systems: Design and implement an intelligent labeling assistant that generates segmentation mask proposals based on minimal user input (clicks, boxes, scribbles).
• Continuous Learning Pipeline: Build pipelines to collect user feedback to iteratively improve model performance.
• Data Integration: Store and manage prompts, generated masks, corrections, and QA signals for training and evaluation.
• Frontend Integration: Collaborate with frontend developers to integrate features into the labeling tool.
• Evaluation & Experimentation: Define and implement evaluation metrics such as IoU/Dice scores; measure improvements across model versions.
• Collaboration: Work with data scientists, ML engineers, and product teams to ensure the system meets user needs.
• Testing & Debugging: Participate in testing and debugging activities to ensure system robustness.
• Documentation: Document system architecture, pipelines, experiments, and results.
