Job summary

Whatnot is seeking a Staff/Senior Staff Backend Engineer to shape the ads platform. You will architect low-latency services for auctions, bidding, and monetization, working across product, ML, and infra teams to deliver scalable systems at global scale.

You will lead architectural decisions, own critical components from inception to production, and mentor engineers while ensuring reliability and performance in a fast-growing, remote-enabled environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years backend/distributed systems experience for Staff or 10+ for Senior.
• Strong fundamentals in consensus, partitioning, replication and sharding.
• Experience with high-throughput, low-latency services and stream processing.

Responsibilities

• Architect and lead high-throughput backend systems powering ad auctions and ranking.
• Define service contracts and fault-isolation strategies for multi-team use.
• Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, and drive production readiness.
• Collaborate with product, ML, and infra teams to ship scalable systems.
