Job description

ATMOS Works is seeking a Software Engineer (m/f/d) to develop and evolve the software that makes our platforms navigate, sense, and operate reliably in complex real-world environments. You will work across embedded flight control software, ground control applications, and autonomy algorithms, always with a clear focus on safety, performance, and field-proven robustness.

Key responsibilities
  • Flight Software & Embedded Systems
    • You will develop, maintain, and optimise firmware and flight control software on embedded platforms, such as PX4, ArduPilot, or custom RTOS stacks.
    • You will implement and tune control loops, state machines, and safety monitors for flight-critical functions.
    • You will write clean, well-tested, and reviewable C/C++ code meeting aerospace-grade software quality standards.
    • You will define hardware-software interfaces in collaboration with Electrical Engineering and document them in interface control documents.
  • Autonomy, Perception & Mission Planning
    • You will develop algorithms for autonomous navigation, path planning, obstacle avoidance, and mission execution.
    • You will integrate sensor data, including GNSS, IMU, LiDAR, cameras, and barometers, into robust state estimation and perception pipelines.
    • You will implement and evaluate computer vision or machine learning components for payload-specific detection and classification tasks.
    • You will build and maintain simulation environments, such as Gazebo or AirSim, for algorithm development and regression testing.
  • Ground Systems, Tooling & Cross-Functional Work
    • You will develop ground control station software, mission planning tools, and telemetry visualisation applications.
    • You will build and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated test frameworks, and HIL test benches.
    • You will work closely with the Field Test team to reproduce and root-cause in-field software anomalies.
    • You will participate in design reviews, code reviews, and sprint ceremonies and contribute to technical roadmap discussions.
Profile required
  • - Completed degree, B.Sc. or higher, in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a comparable field.
  • - Strong programming skills in C and/or C++ in resource-constrained embedded environments.
  • - Solid understanding of real-time operating systems, scheduling, and memory management.
  • - Experience with version control, Git, code review processes, and CI/CD tooling.
  • - Familiarity with at least one open-source autopilot stack, such as PX4, ArduPilot, or equivalent.
  • - Ability to read and interpret hardware documentation, including datasheets, schematics, and ICDs, to implement correct software interfaces.
  • - Fluent in English, written and spoken.
  • *EU nationality is required.
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in aerospace, defence, robotics, or other safety-critical software development environments.
  • Knowledge of MAVLink, DroneCAN/UAVCAN, ROS/ROS 2, or similar robotics middleware.
  • Background in state estimation, Kalman filtering, or SLAM.
  • Familiarity with DO-178C or equivalent software assurance standards.
  • Python proficiency for data analysis, scripting, and test automation.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop, HIL, and software-in-the-loop, SIL, testing frameworks.
