Job description

A.P. Moller - Maersk is the global leader in container shipping services. The business operates in 130 countries and employs c. 90,000 staff. An integrated container logistics company, Maersk aims to connect and simplify its customers' supply chains. Joining Maersk will embark you on a transformational journey with great opportunities for career development within a global organization. As Senior Engineering Manager - Network Core Engineering, you will lead a global engineering team delivering secure, reliable network core products and services - automation-first, measurable, and built to scale across a highly distributed enterprise. You will be exposed to a wide and challenging range of needs and opportunities requiring you to engage closely with stakeholders across all management levels within Maersk as you mature, evolve and operate our portfolio of network core capabilities to become world class.

The Brief

A globally focused shipping and transportation organisation is continuing to drive an ambitious and complex change and transformational programme to deliver a service of excellence for its customers and clients worldwide. The Global CTIO has a mandate from the Maersk board to lead the Technology transformation of Maersk which will enable the Maersk business strategy to become the global integrator of container logistics through digitising the Maersk business processes and customer engagement.

Why this job matters?

The Network Architecture & Engineering function is pivotal to our transformation, responsible for the engineering of network and network security capabilities that provide the digital connectivity backbone for Maersk - connecting people, platforms, assets and value-chain partners.

Scope

Network Core Engineering is responsible for a portfolio of core connectivity products and shared network foundations that enable resilient, high-performance connectivity between enterprise sites, data centers, and cloud environments. Services include (not limited to):

  • Backbone & core routing services enabling resilient connectivity across strategic network nodes.
  • Backbone underlay capacity and carrier connectivity supporting internet services and connectivity between backbone nodes.
  • Cloud connectivity products enabling connections to multiple cloud providers through cloud interconnect/exchange services.
  • Cloud networking hubs / landing-zone connectivity constructs supporting scalable connectivity and integration patterns.
  • Shared network foundation services such as DHCP, IP address management, and time services (as part of enterprise connectivity foundations).
  • Core service observability integration and operational readiness (telemetry, monitoring, runbooks, and recovery patterns) as part of "run as a product" delivery.
What I'll be doing - key accountabilities?
  • Lead a global engineering team responsible for building and running network core services, with clear ownership of reliability and operational outcomes.
  • Own the product engineering lifecycle for core connectivity services: roadmap execution, modernization, technical debt management, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish and operate measurable reliability management: define service indicators and objectives, monitor service health, and drive improvement based on data, incidents, and customer experience.
  • Drive automation-first delivery: embed Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD practices into network change delivery, with safe deployment patterns (validation, progressive rollout, rollback).
  • Partner with the Network Operational Intelligence teams to adopt golden automation patterns and scale self-service onboarding for engineering teams.
  • Improve delivery performance and operational outcomes by introducing measurable engineering practices (e.g., change quality, lead time, and recovery performance) and using them to prioritize improvements.
  • Collaborate closely with enterprise network architecture to align to standards, patterns, and guardrails while enabling high-speed delivery with minimal friction.
  • Partner with product ops to ensure services are clearly described in the catalog, cost drivers are transparent, and vendor interfaces support product outcomes.
  • Enable integration and standardization of newly acquired environments into Maersk's standard network security platforms, controls, and operating model.
  • Own cost leadership and total cost of ownership (TCO) for Core services - set targets, optimize capacity and carriers, partner with Product Operations and vendors - maintaining SLOs while reducing cost-to-serve.
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships across infrastructure and security domains; define crisp interfaces and decision boundaries that reduce handoffs and ambiguity.
  • Develop engineering talent, create an inclusive culture, and foster an environment of ownership, learning, and continuous improvement.
The Candidate

To be considered for this opportunity, candidates will have the following core capabilities and technical expertise.

Core Capabilities
  • 15+ years of experience in enterprise network backbone, cloud networking and data center networking in global, multi-vendor environments, including senior engineering leadership.
  • Proven record leading build-and-run services combining engineering, operations, and automation disciplines.
  • Detailed network design engineering, integration, optimisation knowledge and expertise across all 7 layers of the OSI stack with the ability to employ in both physical and virtual contexts.
  • Strong product-led mindset for internal platforms: clear service contracts, adoption/onboarding focus, and customer outcomes orientation.
  • Effective stakeholder leadership across infrastructure and cyber security teams, able to define decision boundaries and scalable interfaces.
  • Strong people leadership with a track record of building diverse teams and creating an inclusive working environment.
Technical Expertise
  • Backbone/core routing and engineering in large-scale enterprise environments - resilience, capacity, and performance engineering (IP/MPLS R&S, MPLS-TE, L2VPN, L3VPN, EVPN, IPSec, SD-WAN).
  • Hybrid and multi-cloud connectivity design and operations; experience with cloud interconnect/exchange patterns and hub-based connectivity constructs (DC LAN, CLOS fabrics and TE, cloud/virtual networking, cloud exchanges, SONiC architecture, NG firewalls, WAF, load balancers, web proxies).
  • Hands-on proficiency with network automation using Infrastructure-as-Code concepts and modern delivery practices (catalog driven orchestration, automated validation, controlled rollout, CI/CD, Python, NETCONF/RESTCONF/YANG, Ansible/Terraform/Cloud Formation, AIOps).
  • Operational observability and reliability practices: actionable telemetry, monitoring design, incident learning, and service performance reporting.
  • Experience with shared network foundations and dependency management across complex environments (DDI, NTP/PTP, SDN, NFV).
  • Exposure to virtual compute infrastructure concepts - Openstack, KVM, Kubernetes, Docker, VMWare.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a product-led, multi-team model with platform enablement, product operations, and service assurance interfaces.
Your Mindset
  • Automation-first: eliminate repetitive work through code and self-service.
  • Operational excellence: reliability, observability, and recovery speed are design principles, not afterthoughts.
  • Continuous improvement: use incidents, data, and feedback loops to improve services sustainably.
  • Customer-focused: build secure services that reduce friction and enable productivity.
  • Collaborative and transparent: enable fast flow by creating clear interfaces and minimizing handoffs.
  • Growth-oriented Leader: develop people, not just products, creating a culture of curiosity and ownership.
Why join?

You'll help shape how a global organization delivers connectivity as a product - improving speed, consistency, transparency, and customer experience through a scalable product-led operating model. You will lead core connectivity modernization and operations at global scale, partnering across engineering, architecture, platform enablement, service delivery and product operations to deliver measurable outcomes that matter to the business.
