Job summary

payabl. is expanding its Core Gateway team and seeking a Senior Backend Developer. You will balance maintaining a Perl-based gateway with building a new Python microservices platform, delivering high reliability in a live payments environment.

You will work fully remotely from Poland as a contractor, collaborating with stakeholders in an agile setup, and helping shape next-generation payment infrastructure while ensuring performance and scalability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience.
• Strong Python mastery (AsyncIO, FastAPI).
• Comfort with Perl legacy code and eagerness to learn.
• Experience integrating third-party APIs, webhooks, and retry policies.
• Proficient English communication in a multi-stakeholder agile setup.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and extend the Perl-based payment gateway during migration.
• Design, develop, and maintain modern Python microservices for scalability.
• Integrate third-party APIs and external payment services into legacy and new layers.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with teams in agile sprints and maintain clear English communication.
• Contribute to code reviews, enforce high-quality standards, and improve infrastructure with DevOps on CI/CD, containers, and cloud deployments.
