payabl. is expanding its engineering team and seeks a Senior Backend Developer to own both the Perl gateway maintenance and the new Python microservices platform. You will work remotely from Poland and collaborate with a global team on scalable, reliable payment infrastructure.

The role emphasizes modernization, API integrations, and building robust server-side components, with a focus on performance and clean, maintainable code. English communication is essential in agile sprints.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Python mastery (AsyncIO and FastAPI).
• Experience with Perl, including reading/maintaining legacy production code.
• Solid experience integrating third-party APIs, webhooks, and retry policies.
• CI/CD pipelines with GitLab, Docker containerization, and familiarity with AWS services (Lambda).
• Exposure to event-driven architectures (Kafka, message queues).
• Commitment to clean code and ability to explain reasoning behind implementation.
• Strong English communication across multi-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Dual-Track Maintenance: support and extend the existing Perl gateway while migrating to Python.
• Modernization: design, develop, and maintain server-side components in Python for high performance.
• Integrations: connect third-party APIs and external payment services into legacy and modern layers.
• Agile Collaboration: maintain strong English communication across departments in sprints.
• Product Thinking: understand business impact of features beyond code.
• Engineering Standards: participate in code reviews and promote high-quality code.
