payabl is expanding its engineering capabilities and seeks a Senior Backend Engineer to design and build scalable backend systems for a unified payments platform. You will work on high-performance services, integrate third-party APIs, and collaborate with cross-functional teams in a distributed, remote-first environment.

The role emphasizes Python microservices, AWS, Docker, and CI/CD with a focus on performance and reliability in a fintech context.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Python expertise.
• Proven experience building and scaling microservices architectures.
• Strong knowledge of FastAPI or Django.
• Experience with AWS (Lambda, etc.).
• Strong experience with Docker and containerization.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred).
• Understanding of distributed systems and high-load environments.
• Experience designing for performance and scalability.
• Experience integrating third-party APIs.
• Excellent communication and ability to work in a remote-first environment.
• Experience in fintech, payments, or financial platforms.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable Python microservices in a distributed architecture.
• Build and optimize high-performance backend systems for scalability and reliability under high load.
• Integrate and manage third-party APIs and external services.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical solutions and system design approaches.
• Work with AWS services (e.g. Lambda) to architect and deploy solutions.
• Improve and maintain CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes with DevOps.
• Lead and contribute to code reviews and engineering standards.
• Identify bottlenecks and drive performance improvements.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues in distributed systems.
• Guide best practices within the team.
