GitLab is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to design and evolve backend capabilities, tackling high-scope problems across teams. You will influence architecture and quality while improving reliability and performance of our global platform.

You will work in a remote-first, asynchronous environment, collaborating with product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security teams to deliver scalable, AI-enabled systems that ship value to millions of users.

Qualifications

• Deep backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages and systems programming.
• Experience designing modular boundaries and migration-safe architectures.
• Ability to lead through influence and clear written communication.
• Proven experience building agentic AI systems in production.

Responsibilities

• Drive Technical Direction: design and ship backend features with minimal guidance.
• Raise the Bar: define backend standards for quality, security, availability, and performance.
• Mentor & Lead: mentor engineers, remove blockers, improve delivery practices.
• Operational Excellence: diagnose and prevent scale issues; participate in incident response.
• AI Integration: use AI in production engineering workflows.
