GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer to contribute to the backend features that power our platform. You will work with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security to deliver secure, scalable services and APIs across modern languages.

In a remote-first, asynchronous environment, you’ll own features from clarification through production, review code, and help teammates grow while applying AI thoughtfully to engineering tasks.

Qualifications

• Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern backend languages.
• Ability to take a feature from clarification through delivery and follow-up.
• Strong written communication in a remote, asynchronous environment.

Responsibilities

• Own and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance, using Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages.
• Design and maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations, and data models with a focus on security and performance.
• Increase automated coverage through unit, integration, and end-to-end tests and review peers’ code.
• Investigate and resolve build, test, deployment, and runtime issues at the feature boundary; participate in on-call where needed.
• Leverage AI in daily work: validate outputs and understand limitations.
