Job summary

Pearson is seeking an AI Scientist/Engineer to lead design, development, and evaluation of language assessment systems. Focus areas include speech recognition, spoken language modeling, and automated scoring for learner‑facing and hiring‑facing applications.

You will train and evaluate diverse speech models, ensure fairness across accents, and work with product teams to deliver scalable, responsible speech AI solutions.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in CS, EE, SLP, or related field.
• Hands-on experience building speech recognition or automated scoring systems.
• Proficient in Python and PyTorch.
• Strong background in ML, statistics, and experimental design.
• Experience with neural speech models and LLMs for spoken tasks.
• Knowledge of evaluation metrics (accuracy, reliability, fairness).
• Experience in cross-functional product teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and improve speech language models for spoken response understanding.
• Develop and evaluate automated scoring and feedback pipelines for speaking tasks.
• Train, fine-tune, and evaluate acoustic models, cascading models, and scoring models, including LLM-based approaches.
• Design experiments and perform quantitative performance, reliability, and validity analyses.
• Work across speaking constructs such as interactional and pragmatic competence.
• Perform error analysis and reliability studies to guide improvements.
• Collaborate with product, UX, and assessment scientists to integrate models into interactive experiences.
• Apply responsible AI principles to speech systems and monitor governance in production.
• Lead AI conversational assessment product design decisions with stakeholders.
• Balance validity, UX, latency, and scalability in production.
