Position Title

Senior Admissions Counselor

Position Summary

The Senior Admissions Counselor serves as a college ambassador for prospective students, applicants, and newly admitted students. Admission Counselors identify prospective students who meet or exceed the College’s admission requirements and manage their recruitment territories, which include extensive fall and spring travel (approximately 6–8 weeks each season). The counselor guides prospective students and parents through the application process, develops new relationships while maintaining existing ones with key constituencies, and provides leadership on special admissions projects. These projects may include cross‑departmental collaboration, management of program communications, and implementation of new initiatives that support enrollment goals. The Senior Admissions Counselor also supports training, mentoring, and other leadership functions within the Office of Admissions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Represent the Office of Admissions by conducting campus tours, formal presentations, information sessions, college fairs, high school visits, and other recruitment activities both on and off campus.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of admissions recruitment, application, and yield activities – including marketing strategies, recruitment publications, recruitment travel, and data collection on territories.
  • Evaluate applicant credentials in each recruitment territory.
  • Provide leadership for special admissions projects, including cross‑departmental collaboration, program communications, and new initiatives to support enrollment goals.
  • Supervise student workers assigned to admissions projects and mentor them for professional development.
  • Coordinate, assist, and participate in a variety of campus programs and special events for prospective students and families.
  • Support operations staff during peak processing periods.
  • Assist operations staff with workload during peak periods.
  • Work directly with the Director, Assistant Director, alumnae, faculty, and/or student groups in the recruitment process.
  • Actively participate in professional development related to admissions and professional organizations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university – required. Three years’ experience in an admissions office is required.
  • Extensive travel throughout the year; must be willing to travel, possess ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing programs and workshops with strong organizational skills, emphasis on detail and follow‑up, and the ability to work independently while meeting office goals.
  • High energy, enthusiastic, extremely flexible, willing to work long hours and weekends.
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to present information and respond to questions from prospective students, parents, high‑school counselors, the Spelman community, and the general public, including public or group speaking engagements.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business and professional journals; ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), including writing letters, memos, emails, mail merges, flyers, brochures, spreadsheets with formulas, and forms. Excellent typing skills.
Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree and college recruiting experience is preferred.

Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
