Job summary

soweloconsulting is seeking a Backend Lead to own the core backend behind social and dating products, leading a senior 4–5 engineer team in a fully remote, international environment.

You'll shape technical roadmaps, drive scalable architectures on a Ruby on Rails platform, and collaborate with iOS/Android, Product, Data, DevOps, and Trust & Safety teams to deliver high-impact features at scale.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional backend development in production.
• Experience leading a backend team.
• Proficient in an OOP language (Ruby preferred but others OK).
• Experience with high-traffic, scalable systems.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases, caching, and APIs.
• Experience with AWS and DevOps collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a backend engineering team (4–5).
• Translate goals into roadmaps, sprint plans, and priorities.
• Own backend architecture and technical vision for mobile-first apps.
• Drive feature development with cross-functional teams.
• Make architectural decisions for scalability and data flows.
• Establish engineering processes and CI/CD pipelines.
• Create technical documentation for backend systems.
• Hands-on coding and code reviews during incidents.
