Job summary

Soweloconsulting is seeking a Lead Backend Engineer to own the core Ruby on Rails backend for a fast-moving mobile-first product company. You will lead a senior team of 4–5 engineers, translate product goals into technical roadmaps, and drive high-quality execution in a fully remote, international environment.

This contract role involves hands-on coding, scalable architectures on AWS, performance improvements, and clear technical decision-making.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional backend development experience in production environments
• Experience leading a backend team
• Proven ownership of backend architecture for mobile-first, consumer-facing apps
• Strong hands-on expertise with Ruby on Rails or willingness to work with Rails
• Experience building and scaling high-traffic systems focusing on performance and reliability

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of backend engineers (4–5) with 1:1s, feedback and performance management
• Translate product goals into technical roadmaps, sprint plans and backend priorities
• Own backend architecture and technical vision for mobile-first apps
• Drive new features in collaboration with iOS/Android, Product, Data, DevOps and Trust & Safety
• Make architectural decisions around scalability, performance, data flows and AWS infrastructure
• Identify performance bottlenecks, improve API speed and caching strategies
• Establish engineering processes, coding standards, reviews, and deployments/CI pipelines
• Maintain technical documentation and design specs for backend systems
