Job description

The Power System Lead Engineer is responsible for overseeing the electrical power system performance, technical integration, and grid compliance of the offshore wind farm during late-stage design, construction, commissioning, and energization phases.

The role covers the complete electrical system, including wind turbine generators (WTGs), array cables, offshore substation, export cable system, onshore substation, and connection to the transmission network (PSE).

The Power System Lead Engineer ensures that the electrical system, associated control functions, and equipment interfaces are implemented in accordance with the approved design, Employer's Requirements, grid connection agreement, applicable grid codes, Transmission System Operator (TSO) requirements, and relevant technical standards.

The role focuses on resolving system integration issues, assessing the technical impact of design changes, monitoring grid compliance, supporting commissioning and energization, and ensuring that the final installed system meets the required performance and reliability criteria.

The Power System Lead Engineer works closely with the Engineering Manager, Package Managers, Senior Electrical Engineers, Construction Manager, Commissioning Manager, Grid Connection team, and Operations team to ensure that the electrical system is ready for safe energization, grid compliance verification, and commercial operation.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Oversee the completion and technical acceptance of power system studies required for construction, commissioning, and grid compliance.
  • Review and challenge updated electrical network models and study assumptions against the latest approved design and equipment data.
  • Coordinate the collection and verification of technical parameters and simulation models from the WTG supplier, cable suppliers, substation contractors, and other relevant equipment manufacturers.
  • Review relevant study results, including but not limited to:
  • Load-flow and short-circuit analysis.
  • Voltage and reactive power performance.
  • Dynamic performance and transient stability.
  • Electromagnetic transient studies, where required.
  • Harmonics, resonance, and power quality.
  • Protection coordination and fault-clearing performance.
  • Cable energization and switching overvoltage assessments.
  • Electrical system energization and operating scenarios.
  • Identify gaps between the study assumptions and the actual installed or commissioned configuration.
  • Ensure that study conclusions are translated into practical engineering actions, revised settings, control requirements, or commissioning tests.
  • Coordinate updates to network models following design changes, equipment commissioning, and final configuration confirmation.
  • Ensure that the final validated models and supporting reports are available for grid compliance and operational handover.
  • Monitor compliance with the applicable grid code, grid connection agreement, and TSO technical requirements.
  • Maintain oversight of grid compliance actions, technical evidence, simulation studies, and testing requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Grid Connection Manager and TSO on technical matters affecting commissioning, energization, testing, and operational acceptance.
  • Review grid compliance test procedures, technical submissions, and results.
  • Ensure that changes to equipment, control parameters, network configuration, or protection settings are assessed for their potential impact on grid compliance.
  • Monitor outstanding technical conditions and ensure that the required compliance evidence is available for the relevant project milestones.
  • Support resolution of technical issues that may delay grid connection approval, energization, or commercial operation.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Electrical Engineer responsible for the substations on issues involving equipment ratings, protection, control, and substation system integration.
  • Coordinate with protection and control, SCADA, telecommunications, and plant-level control specialists on system integration issues.
  • Coordinate with the Commissioning Manager, substation teams, WTG supplier, cable contractors, and TSO to resolve system-level electrical issues.
  • Review commissioning procedures and results relating to protection systems, control functions, reactive power capability, voltage regulation, and electrical system performance.
  • Verify that the installed configuration and relevant settings are consistent with the approved design and power system study assumptions.
  • Assess commissioning findings, abnormal test results, unexpected protection trips, harmonic issues, and other performance deviations.
  • Coordinate root-cause investigations and the implementation of corrective actions for significant electrical system issues.
  • Ensure that critical power system risks and grid compliance gaps are resolved or appropriately addressed before relevant energization and acceptance milestones.
  • Support grid compliance testing and technical verification of the wind farm's performance against applicable requirements.
  • Review operating assumptions, electrical system limitations, protection documentation, and outstanding grid compliance obligations.
  • Ensure that residual risks and operational constraints are communicated to Operations and Asset Management.
  • Support completion of technical acceptance requirements and close-out of outstanding electrical system issues.
  • Ensure that lessons learned from construction and commissioning are captured and incorporated into the final technical documentation.
