MIDDLE SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL COACH – 5 positions available (one for each middle school). Job ID: 11079.

Position Details

  • Position Type: Temp‑At‑Will (TAW)
  • Compensation: Staff compensated at their regular rate for additional hours. Approximately 27 hours per building (~45 minutes per week), which may be split among multiple individuals.

Regular Duties and Responsibilities
Major Function #1 – Promoting Mock Trial
  • Creates promotional materials and announcements for Mock Trial, including spoken announcements at school, eblast information, and digital flyers to be emailed to families.
  • Ensures promotional materials are provided to all students/families in their home/preferred language.
Major Function #2 – Hosting the Practices
  • Schedules at minimum a weekly 45‑minute practice.
  • If meetings occur outside instructional time, obtains guardian permission for participation.
  • Provides constructive feedback on student performances during practice trials and competitions.
  • Instructs students on case materials, legal procedures, courtroom etiquette, and trial strategies.
  • Accompanies the teams to school, district, and regional competitions as appropriate.
  • Keeps accurate records of student involvement, attendance, and guardian pick‑up (if applicable).
Major Function #3 – Becoming Knowledgeable About the Case/Mock Trial
  • Reads the case provided by the Iowa Bar Association.
  • Guides and mentors students as they develop essential critical thinking, public speaking, and legal advocacy skills through simulated courtroom experiences.
  • Prepares students for various roles within the mock trial, including attorneys, witnesses, and courtroom clerks.
  • Supports students in developing case theories, witness examinations, opening statements, closing arguments, and legal objections.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills, Education, and Experience Required
  • Relevant Human Services BA Degree obtained, in progress, or 5+ years of comparable experience preferred.
  • Strong communication skills across various methods.
  • Integrity with confidential student and family information.

Physical Requirements of Position
  • Sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk to carry out routine duties.
  • Occasionally lift, move, or push items up to 50 lbs (e.g., assisting children or moving/rearranging furniture).
  • Supervise students in all weather conditions.
  • Meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff.
  • Implement Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including appropriate physical restraint procedures and escorting.
