Purpose of role

The Engineering Team Leader is a hands-on technical leadership role within a tribe. You are the day-to-day leader for a team of engineers supporting a portfolio of technology products, reporting directly to the Engineering Manager. This role bridges the gap between strategic engineering direction and daily execution, ensuring your tribe delivers quality, well-governed software whilst developing team capability. The Engineering Team Leader acts as the key technical decision-maker during delivery, balancing trade-offs between speed, quality and technical debt.

Key responsibilities
  • Team Leadership
    • Lead, motivate and develop a team of engineers within your tribe.
    • Conduct regular 1:1s, set objectives, manage performance and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
    • Mentor, coach and develop engineers, helping build team capability and supporting individual career growth.
    • Onboard new team members, identify an onboarding buddy and track onboarding progress.
    • Develop future leaders within your team.
  • Technical Governance
    • Ensure coding standards, code reviews, testing practices and CI/CD pipelines are followed.
    • Champion engineering best practices and maintain technical quality across products.
    • Maintain and enforce technical standards and engineering practices across the tribe, ensuring governance and compliance.
    • Ensure all repositories are onboarded to SonarCloud with quality gates enforced.
    • Drive towards zero critical/blocker issues and maintain healthy coverage thresholds.
  • Delivery Accountability
    • Own sprint-level delivery for your tribe.
    • Collaborate with Scrum Masters on sprint planning, remove blockers, and ensure the team consistently meets commitments.
    • Act as the key technical decision-maker during delivery, balancing trade-offs between speed, quality and technical debt.
    • Ensure alignment across distributed teams.
  • Product Stewardship
    • Maintain deep knowledge of the technology products in your tribe.
    • Ensure documentation, runbooks and operational readiness are kept current and accessible.
    • Review product documentation, runbooks and outstanding technical debt regularly.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Act as the technical point of contact for Technical Product Owners, Business Analysts and other stakeholders.
    • Translate business needs into actionable technical plans.
    • Provide technical direction, working closely with the Engineering Manager and Architects to align on strategy and approach.
  • Operational Excellence
    • Support incident management and production issues within your product portfolio.
    • Drive root cause analysis and ensure post-incident improvements are implemented.
    • Encourage engineers to instrument services with meaningful metrics, traces and logs using Datadog.
    • Set the expectation that every production service has monitors and alerting configured.
  • Driving Best Practices
    • Enforce the agreed branching strategy (e.g. GitFlow or trunk-based) consistently across teams.
    • Ensure PRs are small, well-described and reviewed within agreed SLA.
    • Champion CI/CD pipeline hygiene – green builds, automated tests and clean merges.
    • Promote the use of approved AI tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude) to accelerate development.
    • Encourage experimentation while ensuring adherence to security and data governance policies.
Core Attributes
  • Technical Expertise: Strong hands-on engineering background with the ability to guide architectural decisions and mentor team members on best practices.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identifies process inefficiencies, technical debt and opportunities for automation. Drives improvement initiatives within the tribe.
  • Ownership & Accountability: Takes ownership of outcomes – both successes and setbacks. Sets clear expectations and holds yourself and the team to high standards.
  • Planning & Prioritisation: Balances competing demands across multiple products. Supports backlog refinement and sprint planning with realistic technical estimates.
  • Quality & Risk Management: Embeds quality gates, testing and security practices into daily workflows. Proactively escalates risks before they become incidents.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively across cross-functional teams; communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Delivery Focus: Ensures consistent, predictable delivery across the tribe’s products. Targets 90%+ sprint commitments met with zero unresolved blockers beyond 24 hours.
