Type of contract: B2B
Role Overview
We are looking for a Cloud Engineer with FinOps knowledge to join the team that drives cloud cost optimisation across a large, global multi-cloud estate. This is an engineering position rather than a reporting one: the team builds its own solutions, so you will be expected to implement what you propose, not hand it over to someone else.
The focus sits on GCP and AWS, the two largest platforms in the estate, with Azure present but secondary. You will work through billing files, technical and debug logs and storage usage to establish what actually drives spend, build the automation that removes it, and support the GCP and AWS platform teams as they make their own solutions cost-aware. The initial area of focus is logging, observability and storage cost drivers, where the savings potential is largest.
Responsibilities
- Query and deep-dive into billing files, technical logs and debug logs to pinpoint what actually drives spend, and translate those findings into concrete cost reduction
- Identify and prioritise savings opportunities across log ingestion, retention, tiering, sampling and routing, ranking them by return and risk
- Build and deploy the solution yourself in Python or Java, with automation and IaC, rollback plans and post-change validation
- Build repeatable automation for logging and storage optimisation across the whole estate
- Support the GCP and AWS platform teams in building cost-aware platform solutions
- Prepare optimisation proposals with projected savings forecasts, clear assumptions and stated impact
- Improve tagging, labelling and allocation models to make showback and chargeback accurate
- Run working sessions with platform and application teams, and produce reporting for senior stakeholders on trends, forecast versus actual and risks
Requirements
- 3-5 years as a cloud or platform engineer, ideally having built and run a cloud platform yourself
- Strong working knowledge of GCP and AWS: Cloud Logging, Log Router and Sinks, BigQuery, storage lifecycle policies and billing exports on the GCP side; CloudWatch Logs, S3 lifecycle, Cost Explorer and CUR on the AWS side. Azure experience is a welcome addition rather than the focus
- Solid understanding of cloud storage and the real cost drivers behind it, with good working knowledge of billing files
- Proven ability to query and deep-dive into technical and debug logs at scale, and turn what you find there into measurable savings
- Programming in Python or Java - there is a short coding exercise during the process. Kubernetes is useful
- Proven ability to build and deploy automation at scale with Terraform, Python and/or Bash, including CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Azure DevOps
- Practical command of FinOps principles at large scale: cost allocation, showback and chargeback, optimisation levers. A FinOps Foundation certification is a plus, but understanding cost at enterprise scale matters more
- Comfort operating inside compliance, operational risk and formal change control frameworks
What we offer
- Private medical care, life insurance, and access to Multisport card.
- Stable, long-term projects with full-time employment.
