Better Devices builds cutting-edge electronic systems in partnership with global clients. We combine rigorous engineering, first-principles thinking, and an obsession with quality to deliver impactful devices and technical solutions. Our work spans the full product lifecycle — from early architecture and prototyping to production and field deployment.
We are growing our hardware engineering capability to support both client projects and internal technology development.
About the Role
We are looking for a Technical Lead - Embedded Systems to architect and guide a new platform that connects software intelligence with real-world hardware signals.
This role combines systems architecture, hands-on technical leadership, experimentation, and cross-functional execution.
You will define the core technical foundations for how software observes, interprets, and interacts with physical systems, while working closely with and guiding specialists across software, embedded systems, instrumentation, automation, and product engineering.
Core Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Architect systems for signal ingestion, interpretation, observability, and automated action.
- Define scalable software abstractions for interacting with physical systems.
- Design for noisy, ambiguous, real-world hardware behavior, including timing, synchronization, uncertainty, and replayability.
- Provide technical direction for engineering hires and external technical collaborators.
- Build systems that process, classify, and interpret real-world signals.
- Develop pipelines for trace capture, signal analysis, protocol inference, and structured observations.
- Design automation workflows that support iterative experimentation, debugging, and testing.
- Create frameworks for experiment logging, traceability, replay, and reproducibility.
- Explore how AI-assisted systems can accelerate engineering workflows involving physical hardware.
Team Development
- Help define technical roles needed to scale the initiative.
- Mentor follow-on hires across embedded systems, automation, signal processing, and software infrastructure.
- Build standards for technical quality, velocity, clarity, and execution.
- Build a culture of rigorous experimentation, practical engineering, and fast iteration.
Required Experience & Skills
Must-Haves
- Experience leading complex technical projects from architecture through delivery.
- Experience with embedded systems, firmware, MCUs, SoCs or embedded Linux.
- Strong software architecture: APIs, system boundaries, runtimes, orchestration, and observability.
- Interest in AI-driven automation and intelligent engineering tools.
- Practical intuition for physical systems, including digital/analog signals, timing, noise, sensors, instruments, or hardware interfaces.
- Ability to reason through ambiguous, incomplete, noisy, or unreliable system behavior.
- Experience coordinating work across multiple technical domains or specialists.
- Strong technical communication: able to explain tradeoffs, document decisions, and align engineers.
Nice-to-Haves
- Familiarity with UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, JTAG, SWD, GPIO, PWM, ADC/DAC, or similar interfaces.
- Signal processing experience: sampling, filtering, synchronization, classification, protocol inference, or spectral analysis.
- Experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, signal generators, HIL systems, test rigs, or lab automation.
- Experience building developer tools, internal platforms, SDKs, or automation frameworks.
- Familiarity with AI agents, LLM tooling, tool-calling systems, or autonomous workflows.
- Hands-on experience with Python, C/C++, DSP, FPGA, SDR, robotics, or control systems.
- Experience mentoring engineers or helping build technical teams.
