We are hiring an Embedded / IoT Engineer who understands how data travels from a sensor or tracking device in the field to a cloud platform, and who can work on every hop along the way. You will work on telematics and tracking devices, sensors and industrial IoT hardware from multiple vendors. You will integrate them, decode what they send, and build the cloud-side ingestion and processing that turns raw device data into reliable, usable information.
If you are equally comfortable with a serial console, a packet capture, a Python script and the Azure portal, this role is for you.
About the Role
We are hiring an Embedded / IoT Engineer who understands how data travels from a sensor or tracking device in the field to a cloud platform, and who can work on every hop along the way. You will work on telematics and tracking devices, sensors and industrial IoT hardware from multiple vendors. You will integrate them, decode what they send, and build the cloud-side ingestion and processing that turns raw device data into reliable, usable information.
If you are equally comfortable with a serial console, a packet capture, a Python script and the Azure portal, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities
- Integrate and configure GPS/GNSS trackers, telematics units, sensors and gateways from multiple vendors, and bring them online on our platform.
- Work across the full data path: sensor or chip, firmware, communication module, network, ingestion endpoint, cloud processing and storage.
- Connect devices to the cloud over MQTT, AMQP, HTTP/HTTPS and raw TCP/UDP, choosing the right protocol for each device and use case.
- Build and maintain cloud ingestion pipelines on Azure: device registration and connectivity via IoT Hub, event routing, and processing logic in Azure Functions.
- Parse and decode device payloads (binary, hex, JSON, proprietary protocols) into structured, normalised data.
- Read protocol specifications and vendor documentation and turn them into working parsers and integrations.
- Troubleshoot end to end: connectivity drops, malformed or duplicate data, out-of-order packets, timestamp drift, power and wiring faults, and message-processing failures.
- Work with serial and field interfaces (RS-232/485, CAN, Modbus, analog/digital I/O) and wire up sensors and peripherals.
- Run device commands and remote configuration, and carry out bench testing and field validation.
- Write Python (or similar) for automation, validation, device simulation and testing.
- Document device integrations, protocol mappings and cloud data flows clearly.
- Work with the backend and platform teams so device data lands where it is needed, in the right shape.
Technical Requirements
Core (Required)
- IoT data flow: strong understanding of the full path from sensor/chip to microcontroller or modem, cellular/network, ingestion endpoint, cloud processing and storage.
- Cloud (Azure): working knowledge of Azure IoT Hub (device identity, telemetry, cloud-to-device messaging, message routing) and Azure Functions (triggers, bindings, event-driven processing).
- Protocols and transport: MQTT (QoS, topics, TLS, authentication), HTTP/REST, AMQP, and TCP/UDP socket communication.
- Networking: TCP/UDP, IP, ports, sockets, and cellular basics (GSM/LTE, APN, SIM).
- Data parsing: binary and hex payloads, byte order, bitwise operations, checksums/CRC, encoding and decoding.
- Field protocols: familiarity with Modbus, CAN or OBD, and serial/UART.
- Tracking concepts: GPS/GNSS location data, ignition and movement events, I/O data, telemetry and geofencing logic.
- Programming: Python (core), with working knowledge of C/C++ for embedded.
- Electrical and electronics: reading schematics, using a multimeter, power supply, voltage levels, and sensor and signal types (analog, digital, pulse).
- Tools: comfortable in a Linux terminal; Git for version control.
Nice to Have
- Other Azure services: Event Hubs, Service Bus, Stream Analytics, Device Provisioning Service, IoT Edge, Cosmos DB, Blob/Table Storage, Azure Data Explorer.
- Exposure to message brokers (Mosquitto, EMQX or similar) and Docker.
- Experience with microcontrollers (ESP32, STM32, Arduino or similar) and RTOS concepts.
- Experience with AT commands and cellular modems.
- Packet analysis tools (Wireshark, tcpdump), serial terminals, logic analyzers or oscilloscope basics.
- Experience with SQL or NoSQL databases and time-series data.
- Exposure to fleet, asset or industrial monitoring, energy or smart metering deployments.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini) for scripting, parsing and debugging.
Candidate Profile
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Engineering or a closely related field.
Experience
- Minimum 18 months of relevant hands‑on experience in IoT, embedded systems, telematics or industrial automation.
Personality & Professional Attributes (Non-Negotiable)
- Strong Personality: self-assured, resilient under pressure, and able to own tasks end to end.
- Communication Skills: excellent spoken and written English; able to explain technical issues to engineers, clients and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ownership Mindset: you do not hand off a problem until it is solved. You own a device issue from the field to the dashboard.
- Troubleshooter’s Instinct: methodical and curious, and keeps digging until the root cause is found.
- Accountability: meets deadlines and communicates blockers early.
- Professional Appearance & Conduct: presentable and professional, as the role may involve client sites and field work.
- Punctuality: consistent, on‑time presence.
