Job summary

Smart Working is seeking a Senior PHP/Symfony Engineer to take hands-on ownership of backend development in a mature Symfony platform. You will upgrade from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7, work with an Angular front end and Python AI microservices, and collaborate within a remote product squad.

You will demonstrate an architect mindset, strong independence, and a track record of designing scalable backend systems.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience, including 5+ years in PHP.
• 3+ years of recent Symfony 6.x/7 experience at Advanced level and strong backend design skills.
• 4+ years of backend system design and scalability experience.
• 2+ years of AI tooling usage including reviewing AI outputs.
• 5+ years of MySQL experience; exposure to PostgreSQL or similar is a plus.
• 1+ year of Angular/TypeScript awareness; front-end exposure welcomed but not required.
• 3+ years of PHPUnit or similar testing experience.
• 2+ years of CI/CD workflow experience with GitHub Actions; other tools acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver backend work in the core Symfony application with high autonomy.
• Critically assess code, including AI-generated output, and ensure robust solutions.
• Move the project from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7 while resolving upgrade issues.
• Improve performance, scalability and maintainability of the application.
• Collaborate with Angular front end, TypeScript and Python AI services and DevOps.
• Read and reason about Angular/TypeScript code in a backend-focused role.
• Understand system-wide impacts of decisions across Symfony, Angular and AI services.
• Identify root causes and deliver maintainable, well-reasoned solutions.
• Work remotely within a cross-functional squad with accountability.
• Comply with SOC 2, PII and security controls and pass background checks.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to architectural decisions and leadership.
