Job summary

Smart Working is seeking a Senior PHP/Symfony Engineer to own backend development in a mature Symfony platform handling marketing and revenue data for enterprise customers. You will work with Angular front end, TypeScript and Python AI services, and you’ll join a remote, cross-functional squad with high autonomy.

The role emphasizes architecture mindset, independent work within 2–3 months, and stringent security and compliance practices, including SOC 2 and PII controls.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience including 5+ years in PHP
• 3+ years Symfony 6.x/7 experience at Advanced level
• 4+ years of backend system design and scalability
• 2+ years of advanced experience with AI tooling and evaluating AI-generated output
• 5+ years of advanced MySQL experience (PostgreSQL or similar may be considered)
• 1+ year of Angular/TypeScript awareness; React or Vue with TS may be considered
• 3+ years of advanced automated testing with PHPUnit
• 1+ year of intermediate experience with framework upgrades and legacy-code modernization
• 2+ years of intermedi ate AWS experience; Azure/GCP may be considered
• Fluent written and spoken English
• Strong communication and proven remote-working experience
• Ability to work UK hours
• Ability to pass strict background checks and comply with PII policies
• Hands-on technical approach with an architect mindset

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver backend work in the core Symfony application with independence within 2–3 months
• Critically assess code produced by the team and AI tools
• Assist moving from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7 and resolve upgrade blockers
• Improve performance, scalability and maintainability for safer feature integration
• Collaborate with Angular front end, TypeScript and Python AI microservices
• Read and reason about Angular/TS codebase despite backend focus
• Challenge solutions, identify root causes and improve system design
• Deliver maintainable solutions in a legacy codebase with steady pace
• Maintain high autonomy while collaborating in a remote squad
• Respect SOC 2, PII and security controls
