Job summary

Smart Working is seeking a Senior PHP/Symfony Engineer to own backend development in a mature Symfony platform that handles marketing and revenue data for enterprise customers. The role focuses on the backend, with upcoming upgrade from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7 and collaboration with an Angular front end.

You will work in a remote, cross-functional squad with product, QA and DevOps, maintain code quality, review AI-generated output, and ensure security controls are respected while delivering

Qualifications

• 8+ years of commercial software engineering experience, including 5+ years in PHP.
• 7+ years PHP experience at Expert level.
• 3+ years of Symfony 6.x/7 experience at Advanced level. Laravel/Symfony differences considered.

Responsibilities

• Own and deliver backend work in the core Symfony application, working independently within 2–3 months.
• Critically assess code produced by team and AI tools, challenging proposed solutions.
• Help move the application from Symfony 6.1 to Symfony 7, resolving upgrade blockers.
• Improve performance, scalability and maintainability for new features.
• Coordinate with Angular front-end, TypeScript and Python AI services, and DevOps.
