Job summary

Smart Working is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own large-scale production systems in a fully remote, long-term role. You will migrate critical components from Yii2 to Laravel and from MariaDB to PostgreSQL, while building APIs for web and mobile platforms and ensuring security for public-sector-like clients.

You will join a small in-house team of about 10 senior developers, taking end-to-end ownership and collaborating closely on data-heavy backend and AI-related work.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of commercial PHP backend development.
• 5+ years of experience with large-scale SaaS or complex production systems.
• 3+ years of PostgreSQL experience.
• 5+ years of API design and third-party integration experience.
• 3+ years of Laravel and/or Yii2 experience.
• 3+ years of PHPUnit experience.
• 2+ years of microservices or monolith-decomposition experience.
• 2+ years of AWS experience.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve the PHP backend that ingests GPS and telematics data, safety hardware events and DVR video, and sends real-time alerts.
• Build and maintain APIs used by web, mobile apps and integration partners.
• Migrate Yii2 to Laravel and PostgreSQL from MariaDB as part of platform modernization.
• Support decomposition of monolith into microservices.
• Collaborate with AI/computer vision work to align backend with vision tasks.
• Take end-to-end ownership of production systems with minimal hand-holding.
