Job summary

Smart Working is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own large-scale production backends, handle data ingestion (GPS/telematics), and drive migration efforts from Yii2 to Laravel while supporting PostgreSQL migrations. The role emphasizes security, GDPR, and scalable architectures in a remote-first environment.

You will join a small team of ~10 engineers, contribute to AI-related work, and take end-to-end ownership of production systems with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of expert PHP backend development.
• 5+ years in large-scale SaaS or complex production systems.
• 3+ years PostgreSQL at Advanced level.
• 5+ years API design & third-party integration.
• 3+ years Laravel and/or Yii2 at Advanced level.
• 3+ years PHPUnit at Advanced level.
• 2+ years microservices or monolith decomposition.
• 2+ years AWS at Intermediate level.
• Experience in telematics, fleet or logistics domain.
• Experience with video/media handling at scale.
• Ability to take end-to-end ownership of mature production systems.
• Strong complex-system exposure is essential.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve the PHP backend ingesting GPS, telematics data, and DVR video.
• Build and maintain APIs used by web and mobile platforms and partners.
• Deliver the Yii2-to-Laravel migration and the MariaDB-to-PostgreSQL migration.
• Support decomposition of the monolith into microservices.
• Collaborate with AI/computer vision lead and production teams.
• Take end-to-end ownership of production systems with limited hand-holding.
• Work in a small senior team with flexible processes and strong judgement.
